keep in mind this thing has been bombarded by hard radiation for the past 33 years. I'm surprised we haven't run into problems before now.

I think it's remarkable as well that the two probes have weathered so well, especially considering the kind of shooting gallery it is out there. (Micrometeroids at near-relativistic velocities = Not!FUN)

single bit flip in memory. They say they don't know why it happened.

Given the age of those spacecraft and the environment they are in, I would bet hard radiation + 30 year old electronics is the cause.
