BTW, the end of this month would be the 5th month on the job. I knew going to OSHA would mean law enforcement, but that didn't sink in until they issued me my badge. No sidearm though. That's reserved for the OSHA folks at Alaska! ....or so the scuttlebutt at work goes.
I can't talk about the cases I'm working now (suicide before telling and all that) , but I suffice it to say everyday is different.
Edit: Oh, and I'm enjoying the challenge!

In three hours I'll be on the road to my interview. So far I've managed to keep my anxiety under control. It helps a lot that I didn't apply to them -- they solicited me, and even when I warned them I didn't have all the qualifications they wanted, they still wanted to see me. I don't feel like I have to successfully sell an image I've created.

Anyway, wish me luck.

Given my handle and the fact that I've been regularily wishing you luck in earlier interviews - I've decided that it might not be a good idea.

...and I'm back, and have had dinner, and am not wailing and gnashing my teeth.

It went well. It sounds like an exciting and challenging place. And I should hear if I'm coming back for the second and final round in a few days.

I was thinking queries a little more complicated than that, yeah.

Usually complex joins across columns that weren't indexed.

I've also had to explain to a customer that while its a cute trick " order by rand() limit 1" does not scale at all well for large tables...

So was I when I took the test.  Apparently we were both wrong.  And may I say how glad I am that I've never had to explain something quite that... interesting to a customer.

I just got an email from one of the jobs I applied for telling me they've finally decided that they're not going to hire anyone after all.  This would be more of a big deal for me if the job weren't one that I had applied for five freaking months ago!
On the other hand, I just had a surprise phone interview for an Information Specialist position here in NJ that I applied for about a month ago.  I should hear back from them in a week whether I go on to the next round or not.

So I just finished an hour long phone interview for development/engineering position.  I don't think it went badly, but past experience says I'm not really good at making those sorts of judgements.  Let's hope their HR department gets back to me sooner than certain places you've applied to Bob.

I just got a notice from the state department of labor about the fourth tier of my extended unemployment benefits, which started when the third tier ran out a week or so back. Instead of being 12-13 weeks like the other tiers, this one is only 6. Crap.
On the good side, though, I have another phone interview tomorrow.  And no one from my last few interviews has called or emailed me to say "thanks but no" yet...

Had a face-to-face interview this morning. Due to circumstances (mostly) beyond my control I wasn't as well rested as I'd've liked, and I ended up blanking a bit on the written and babbling a bit in the spoken. But surprisingly, I find myself cautiously optimistic.

Gah. After so much failure, I must have some kind of inner pessimist. In the hours since I felt cautiously optimistic, I find myself nitpicking the entire interview in my head and going "stupid, stupid, stupid!" at everything, and losing the optimism I had just a few hours ago. Argh.

One of the interviews I felt worst about was the one that got me a job, whereas the ones that I thought went well never resulted in anything, so don't lose hope yet. Of course I managed to get a grand total of 4 interviews in my 6+ months of job hunting (and I was hunting hard), you seem to be getting more interviews but less success. At least you are getting your foot in the door, I barely managed that much.

My advice is to mostly ignore Internet adds, they are so cheap that the company is usually looking more to reassure investors rather than hire. Adds with an actual cost means that the company is far more desperate to get someone now.

I guess I should note that if I can back away and look at the interview objectively, I don't think I did too badly. The problem comes in backing away and looking objectively. There seems to be some part of me that is actively grabbing moments from the interview and trying to look at them in the absolute worst light.

A classmate of mine at the OSHA Training Institue tells me they are looking for 2 Industrial Hygienist positions for the compliance program for New Mexico OSHA, Santa Fe office. An ex co-worker of mine is lives in Santa Fe and she's looking to go back to work. So I told her my classmate's contact number. I want to see in 6 months what happens.

Okay, so, just a few weeks ago I posted about the job that informed me five months later that they wouldn't be hiring anyone after all. As of this morning, I can beat that.

I just got a similar notice from a job I applied for in November 2009.

Meh. Several interviews since the start of March -- half phone, half face-to-face. No good news yet, though; one place I interviewed at a couple weeks ago just let me know that they're moving on with another candidate. A lot of places haven't gotten back to me yet once way or another -- a major insurance company has assured me I'm still under consideration for a job I talked to them about almost two months ago. And I'm finding I'm getting more cold calls from recruiters who've seen my resume on one of the boards.
