Almost every single one of those relies on you making your info public rather than friends-only. I think facebook should definitely default to the latter, but still, it's the silliness of people that leads to this sort of thing, not any inherent fault with Facebook.
I think part of the problem is that most people don't realize how much information they are making public.

I would be much less full of hate for facebook if they did a better job of educating their users.

Facebook used to default to friends-only; it's when they changed that that they got into trouble with the Privacy Commissioner here in Canada.

So the fault seems to be with the people behind Facebook, not the service itself...

If they did that, they wouldn't make as much money. The whole system is designed by default to reveal everything you input, and to make everything available to Facebook's advertisers to do their demographic targetting. I make a specific point of not using Facebook myself... or any social network... again it's my Internet Tinfoil Hat syndrome. If it's up on Facebook, it's up for the world... from Future employers, to future girlfriends. I tend to see SN's as the digital equivalent of streaking naked in front of the entire world... if you're not careful, everyone will see everything, and it will come back to haunt you.

I have used Facebook though.... I am usually called in to help older members of the family upload photo's to the site, or similar.

I'm on Facebook... but I only tend to post some geeky stuff or hobby-related stuff to it these days. And use it to keep in touch with some friends and family.

well it makes sense for any major corporation to snag it.

what PR department isn't going to be paranoid and check to make sure that their employees aren't being stupid?

I've got mine completely set to 'Friends Only'.
Same.
