An "open alternative" to Facebook, called http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11108891]Diaspora, is about two weeks away from launch.

Eh? What makes it the 'Open Alternative' so to speak?
They're planning on making the source code open-source. Anyone will be able to read the software - or alter, recompile, and run it somewhere else. (Don't like Diaspora's privacy policy? Start your own social networking site with your own rules!)

the problem is that 90% of the value if a social networking site is the social network.

and getting enough of your social network to switch to new!shiny!social network is not easy work.

And you can bet that any company that has it's business model based around a social network is going to make it dirt simple to feed data IN, and harder than getting blood from a stone to get it OUT.

If I read it correctly, what goes on is you host your own personal 'page' of it on your site, and it has all sorts of link-ins to be aware of your friends who are hosting it on their own personal sites.
