THe big Steam winter sale. I've picked up two full games to gift - well one really - a copy of Portal & one of Torchlight. I've also got discount coupons valid after the 2nd of 50% off the Fallout collection (FO1, 2 & Tactics), Disciples 3 & a 33% off a Valve game one. I suppose I should aim to unlock more stuff but my shame pile's plenty big.

I've been running steam in offline mode the last week, since I don't want it hogging the limited satellite bandwidth I have on vacation here. So I've just been browser-shopping through firefox, and content to pass up games for chump change (Mysteries of the Sith for $0.74!) on the order that I'll be busy with The Old Republic, and every cent is another I have to pay their bills. e_e

<necro's thread>
for the next 48 hours steam has a sale on both skyrim and the elder scrolls pack
Skyrim (by itself) is 33% off ($40 instead of $60)

The elder scrolls pack:
- The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind® Game of the Year Edition
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion® Game of the Year Edition
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
is 50% off ($50 instead of $100)

so I know I'm going to pickup skyrim. The question is: do I get elder scrolls 3 and 4 for $10? can anyone relate it to other games? what about them do you love?

I've only played both Skyrim and Oblivion a bit (Morrowind not at all), so I can't speak exhaustively on their merits. However, I can say that that both are rather similar, and you'll probably like one if you do the other. TES is probably much like Fallout (of which I've only hearsay), in terms of freeform-gameplay, which is probably no surprise given their from the same dev group. I don't see any reason not to get the pack beyond the obvious "it costs more" if you like the gameplay and a the usual sword&sorcery fantasy setting.

I will note that a few cosmetic mods can really make enhance the experience, the subject of which I can bring up in a later post or thread, should you be interested. This is especially true concerning character models, and to a lesser degree world textures.

Get it.
I bought all three of them at different times- Morrowind before it became a bargain-bin title, Oblivion the week it came out, and Skyrim on preorder. Morrowind is more complex than any of the others, allowing you (for example) to create basically any spell you want from the effects in the game, or enchant any piece of equipment (of which there are more types than later games) with a wider range of effects. It has a good bit more of a learning curve, and is stupidly broken when you figure out a number of gambits, but if you can get into it, it has the sort of ridiculous immersion/attention-grabbing quality Skyrim has.
Oblivion... doesn't. It's pretty, by comparison, and it definitely has its moments, but it sacrifices the openness and complexity of TES3, and the graphics didn't age all that well. The game holds your hand more than the previous one did, but there aren't as many types of weapons and armor, there are fewer spells and enchantments to create, and the game just feels more constricted. Leveling up can be anything from a slight benefit to a genuine downgrade, depending on how you do it and what sort of character you have, which is sort of ridiculous. Still a good game overall, but time spent playing TES4 is time that could've been spent playing one of the other two, and that's a loss in my book.
Skyrim fixes a lot of the things Oblivion did wrong. The game world has a lot less of the uncanny valley I saw in Oblivion. They fixed leveling, and created a downright inspired world to explore. The game is still simpler, as far as magic/enchanting goes, and they streamlined/dumbed down (depending on your point of view) a few other aspects of older games, but I found myself less than annoyed with that. I was too busy enjoying the world. That's the one aspect that Morrowind had, and Oblivion didn't- a world that sucks you in, makes you want to keep playing, and rewards your persistence with fun.
Buy the pack, mod the heck out of ALL OF THEM, and then play 3 and 5. If you're ever lacking on great games to play, go back to 4.

And you can guess what on now. I still have a copy of Portal and Torchlight to gift but now it's joined by 2 copies of Civ 4, one of Poker Night and Just Cause 2. Oh and a possibility of Hitman: Blood Money which I picked up in Square Enix's "What's in the Box" deal, I'm not certain if I want it or not.
Is there a Mac copy of Civ4?

Sucrose Octanitrate.
Proof positive that with sufficient motivation, you can make anything explode.
The answer to that is yes. Civ4 is a part of the steamplay program which if you go: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_art ... -QHKN-1308 indicates cross OS programs. But in a nutshell, if you've got one version of Civ4 on Steam you've got the other OS version free.
I'm eyeing the X-COM Enemy Within expansion, which is on sale for $10 bucks off. Waiting to see if I get it for Christmas first, but if not, the sale goes through the New Year. Also, I have them already, but the other X-COM DLC is on sale for half their regular price, which makes them roughly 3 bucks a piece at most.

I've been debating about getting NuXcom too. But if I've got the 360 edition, do I really need the steam edition? And it's the same with a number of cross-platform games.
