Full Version: Copyright/License question about Star Trek: Bridge Commander

While going through the freebie wiki, I discovered that three downloads were listed as having been exported from Star Trek: Bridge Commander. Is this legal?

(I don't know; I don't have a copy of the game so I can't look at the license. There's an outside chance that this might be a permitted action by the game license... but, for some odd reason (cough cough Paramount cough) I suspect it isn't. Does anyone still have a copy of Star Trek: Bridge Commander?)

I will search through my box of game manuals and see if I can find a copy of the EULA. Decompiling/extracting resources is generally a standard no-no, though, so I wouldn't be expecting much.

It is -generally- a standard no-no, although not universally.

Mechwarrior Online, for example, expliclty permits it for personal use only - they have explicit language about allowing 3d printing of the models, but not sale thereof.

Proof positive that with sufficient motivation, you can make anything explode.
Thanks.

It's because of those exceptions that I need to ask...

I would err on the side of caution. Some games allow distribution of modifed assets only, and the game in question does have a mod community you might wish to ask for the official stance on this, but if they are stock assets, assume it's not fine at all unless the official manual says otherwise.
Oh, definitely. The links are already commented out of the list with a note why - I'm just waiting for confirmation before either deleting them altogether or adding them back to the list.

Extracting assets would probably be considered reverse-engineering and/or making copies of the program, which are explicitly forbidden. Here are the exact terms, excluding the standard warranty/indemnity/limited liability bits.
