A new episode of Velveteen vs. for the first time since February, Velveteen vs. Temptation.

Thanks to the horrifying new TOS that LiveJournal rolled out in April, Seanan is now posting Velveteen to her Blog and Dreamwidth instead.
May God forgive me. May history judge me charitably.

We are formally introduced to a separate bare squad, which will soon be joining the main company; Lanei Tavish defends her choice to call herself a hacker, not a slicer (Travolore is replying to some nits I picked); Mera and Phara Pyso have a mother-daughter chat about light vs. dark; and Malya the Miraluka mopeygoth does not tell Kara the honorary Wookiee what her vision(s) last chapter revealed, but does at least tell her why she's not telling her. (Trav, you mad bastard, you hurt all three of my feelings.)

DESPERATELY UNNEEDED UPDATE: Now available at the Pit of Voles for all your godless trash tastes:

The Second Flowering Of Yggdrasil: An Analysis Of The Norse Resurgence, 1710 Wrote:The era of the Papacy between 904 and 1046, typically referred to as Saeculum Obscurum (Latin: Dark Age), is generally accepted to be the lowest depths of the Catholic Church's moral authority in its recorded fourteen centuries of history from Constantine I.  During this time, beginning with the installation of Pope Sergius III in 904, and ending with the final deposing of Pope Benedict IX in 1046, the Church was controlled by a series of powerful and corrupt aristocratic families, who used the ecclesiastical power of the Papacy to increase their worldly influence, and visa versa.

Corruption during this period was the norm, especially in the senior ranks of the Church, who set the trends for their underlings.  Routine acts of corruption during this time period included the sale of Church offices and roles (simony), the sale of indulgences, framing scribes with secular crimes to force them to take Holy Orders, bribery, extortion, blackmail, cronyism, and the occasional assassination, as well more personal venality on the part of the individual priests.

I can't really blame him. There seemed to be a lot of stuff there that crossed the line from "Here's how you can improve your story" to "Here's how you can turn your story from the story you want to tell into the story I want", which gets old fast.

Though after reading some of the complaints about the final (non-epilogue) chapter and then rereading it, I'm finding I appreciate it more than I did the first time around. So, uh... good job?

While for me, it remains very much tripping over at the finish line. Oh well, I've spent money on worse finishes.

Something like that. I mean, I personally get what 11M was trying to do, just like I got what Gryphon was trying to do with the original version of "The Vulcan Heart"; it's just that (again like Gryph) he didn't quite stick the landing first time, and a lot of commenters, in their vehemence to point this out to him, said more than they meant from the sheer force of actually meaning it.

Eh, speaking as someone who actually helped sort through that with Xeno, that isn't remotely what happened. Legit problems with the Salem chapter were notated and totaled something along the lines of sixteen distinct problems. 11th and GL noted this and said they would work on it to address those issues, then went silent for a few pages/days...

When they came back, they started insinuating that the critics were in fact people who had not read the fic at all, but were 'new users' coming into their thread to flame/troll. They also claimed that the subject of the story was never about the characters, but the overall merging of the two fandoms in the crossover.

One user called them out for that last claim, and pointed out that 99.9% of the story, up until that final update, had been about the Characters, not about the merging settings.

The Co-authors promptly declared that said user was threadbanned, told him to get the fuck out, and generally switched from implying and insinuating to outright saying that many, if not all of the critics were trolls.

Another user called them out for THAT, pointing out that the criticism was legitimate, and that the reason people were starting to get pissed was entirely because of how the Authors were handling the criticism.

The Co-authors, as well as a bunch of hugboxers, promptly declared this user to be a troll, and flamed and insulted him.

We had a spreadsheet and combed through all the pages to try and make sense of this. The critiques given were well-thought out and detailed and there was only hostile action from critics in response to the authors being jerks. :/ It was a shame because I was enjoying the story, mostly, but I don't know what was going on with that Salem stuff.

Okay, that's a strangely entertaining mental image for some reason.
