Because I’ve seen a lot of traffic and misinformation about this:

Waitaminute... You people have an alert system that you can opt out of?

Isn't that like opting out of your home's smoke alarm?

What brain-dead idiots decided to put an off switch into a warning system?
I dunno, people who take the battery out of the smoke alarm because the damn thing goes off every time they cook? It's a thing I have known multiple people to do. (I consider a lot of smoke while booking to be a sign of duin at rong, but both of my parents, two of my elder sister's ex-husbands, at least half the idiots I had the misfortune of sharing a dorm with for one semester...)
The only time we get alerts is an Amber Alert, and since I work at home and not on the road, it's always irrelevant to me. Well, that and tsunami warnings, but I'm a good 30m above sea level with barrier islands so, meh.

Honestly the more disturbing implication is that government thinks it has a right to broadcast whatever it wants to my phone. I own the device, not them.
Labster?

The government has reserved the right to broadcast whatever it wants to everyone inside its borders as long as it's an 'everybody must know this' thing due to it being a national safety issue. And all it does is tell every provider 'this message? You send it to everybody who uses your phone service.'

It's basically government approved spam, with safeguards put into place you don't get viagra advertisements and only actually important information.
Is this another case of you not trusting the people that you elect? (If it is, you need to start electing people you can trust, which probably means people not connected with either of the parties you have in place now.)
Just received the alert on my phone. No pictures of mushrooms, thank God.
Weird. It went off on other people's phones in my office, but not on mine.
How old is your phone?

(In Canada, you need a 4G LTE phone to receive the alerts - reasonably old, but not so old that the format has complete market saturation yet. But our system is different.)
Bwahahaha!  I don't own a cell phone!  Samuel L. Jackson can't drive ME insane!  (I already walked there.)
Quote:How old is your phone?
<shrug> Two years? It's a Galaxy S7.
