Well, you do have to remember that Shinji's childhood has been carefully engineered so he hates his old man no matter what.

Also, contrary to what we may see in some anime, the typical Japanese man likes mediocrity. This way, you blend in and don't make any waves. Low risk low return is their favored lifestyle. Hot babes and giant robots is the very antithesis of this life style.

And heroics are something you read about other people doing, not something you do yourself
