Okay, from the Three Graces thread, and probably one of the early plotbunny posts, we know that the ship name Enterprise is banned.
Are there any others, or should we work up the series of events that banned it?
Candidate for Banning:
Millenium Falcon -- for similar reasons to the ban on Enterprise
Contrast With:
Most common ship names in Fenspace
--Anything ending in -prise among the Trekkies: NCC-1701-Q USS Reprise, NCC-1071 USS Second Prize
--Systems among the Warsies for those ships that get named: Dagobah, Yavin-4, Naboo, Corellia
--The same as the common Yacht names for those vessels already named before they lifted off: $name's Toy, John Bee etc.

Any central ship from a show or movie, on general "play-nice-with-trademarks" grounds -- so no Serenity, no Galactica and so on.
Obscure ones are probably okay -- for instance, the various flagships on Buck Rogers in the Twenty-Fifth Century -- but basically, anything that would prompt a whine along the lines of "Why do you get to be X?" from other members of the faction should automatically go in the hopper.
The big question is how does the registry enforce this? There's always going to be some obnox who figures the rules don't apply to him. How is he ... ahem... encouraged to conform to community standards?
(Oh, and in case you were serious, "RFC" = "Request for Comments")

The idea I had when posting was that after the last shuttle flight, the reason the Trekkies (and a few others) hadn't already gone for the name (There was already a space ship with the name) dissapeared.
Thus at 12 midnight 1st 2010, the registrars got about 2000 registrations ALL for the name Enterprise.
Most of these got withdrawn over the next few days, but then fights and legal rumblings started breaking out among the 20 or so die-hards. Hacks and DoS attacks on the registration network occured. At least three attempts to physically break into Starbase 1's central computer core and hack the system from there were deflected by Starfleet security.
Finally the registrars had enough and unanimously voted to BAN the name Enterprise from the network, litterally making anyone who tried to use it immediatly suspisious and would be welcomed by security at any attempt to dock.
Most of the factions at this point decided to 'discourage' the use of ship names that had special meaning to them.
Since then no name has been fully banned, although several have been provisionally banned to prevent 'guzumping'.
And Foxboy? RFC means Request For Comments. It's the standard the W3C uses for discussion and definition of protocols, their changes and extensions.
EDIT: And I've just seen Bob's reply, which gives the reason that they didn't have this problem before.

Except that the faction itself is allowed to use the names from their source material. Thus, "General Solo" doesn't get to fly the
Millenium Falcon, but there's a Warsie base

Between KandorCon and SOS-Con, there's the social "do you really want to be like that idiot in
Stellvia?" factor... but that won't stop everyone.
There's also the factions who'll "lean on" anyone who walks all over their perogatives... but, again, that won't stop everyone.

What feels like a million years ago, I picked up a fascinating geek-press book titled "History of the Vessel Enterprise." Trekkie book, obviously; it was basically a list of all the ships named Enterprise anywhere ever, up to about 1990 (in real-life terms) and continuing through to the Trekverse history.
Fascinating stuff, really. It turns out there were a *hell* of a lot more Enterprises than you might think. Well over a hundred of them, in fact, and many of them with overlapping service periods.
So what, you ask? Well, it certainly seems to me that registrars of the past and present didn't have a problem with multiple ships having the same name. Fenspace has many thousands of people in it, there's always going to be some overlap. *Let* the fen choose their names as they will, as long as the ships aren't completely identical what does it matter?---

Well, if we try and follow the thought that the factions are (generally) acting like actual nation-states, then it's their job to maintain ship registries. So the Trekkies can say there's only one Enterprise in Starfleet, but at the same time there's an Enterprise in the Warsie camp (totally different make & model), one in the Browncoat registry, and another dozen or so Enterprises among the nonaligned fen. Same goes for almost any other "famous" ship name.
Way I figure it, as long as the IFF squawks are different the
name doesn't automatically matter.---
