Ladies, Gentlemen, Bots & Others:

As my Christmas present to myself, changes are afoot at FenWiki.

The first change is, we're moving to our own domain! Once I get things sorted, we're moving to

http://www.fenspace.net/

so adjust your bookmarks accordingly.

Secondly, I'm making a command decision; we're moving to MediaWiki. I've got a 90%-complete backup of the wiki already formatted for MW, and I'll take care of getting the rest of it (mostly Mystery pages) moved over. All you guys have to do is set up new user accounts when everything's ready. That will be by the end of New Year's Day, even if I have to push an all-nighter to get everything out the door.

Third... there is no third. Just sit back, relax and have a decent end of solstice holiday season, content in the knowledge that Your Crippled Moderator is working hard behind the scenes to improve your Fenspace experience.

See you guys in the funny pages.

Will you be leaving a pointer at the old site, or am I going to have to go edit a few (dozen?) of my posts on the SJGames forums?

(And if we're switching to MediaWiki, then I may as well switch from plain-text to OpenOffice for writing. OO's got a MediaWiki export filter built
in...)

It does as of version 3.1. (Choose "File | Export..." from the main menu, and the choices that the drop-down "Save As" box gives you are PDF and MediaWiki. What ones does with the resulting file afterward is not yet known to me; presumably one opens it and does a copy-and-paste of the contents into the Wiki page-edit window.)

My presumption was correct - the MediaWiki export filter produces a text file with content formatted for MediaWiki.

Mal, I see you're using an older snapshot of the FenWiki to populate the new version. How long will I have to get my changes off the old wiki before you
shut it down? (I don't have time today - New Year's Eve and all that - but I should have some time over the weekend to do the equivalent of a diff of
the two wikis.)

Yeah, the snapshot is a bit older, from around August (for obvious reasons). I'll leave the old wiki up for a week or so, that way everybody can get
necessary changes moved over & populated. Also you might notice some problems with images - I'm working that in between beers, so hopefully by tomorrow
we'll have that fixed.

Okay, I think I've got all my newer stuff copied over. (That's my newer stuff only; I don't remember what anyone else changed.) I also took a stab at cleaning up the "Culture of Fenspace" page - it's still half-assed, but it's slightly better than no-assed at all (especially since it now has a link to "Places in Fenspace").

So... the stuff Mal hadn't seen would be the character writeup for http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Naoko_Sato]Naoko Sato, the GURPS http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... _Bunnygirl]Generic Bunnygirl template, and a few comments here and there (including a spoiler for chapter 3 of LoGG on the page for The Main Belt). The brand-new stuff would be a quickie writeup on the http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... ory:Gaming]Gaming Category page, and character stubs for http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Star]Star, http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Yomiko_Readman]Yomiko Readman, http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Yuu_Inagawa]Yuu Inagawa, http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... nsen-Scott]Helen Swansen-Scott (please tell me nobody's surprised by her middle name), http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Natsuko_Aki]Natsuko Aki, and http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Agatha_Clay]Agatha Clay.

Happy New Wiki!

Ah, yes... Blackaeronaut, once you've created an account on the new Wiki, could you go through the http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... cter_Guide]Character Guide page and pull your characters together into one subsection? Gathering the data together is the first step toward setting up a "portal" template for all your pages...

Edit: I've already started the http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... oughriders]portal - it lists Ben, Gina, Midnight, the F-EZigs, 36 Atlantae, and The Roughriders, because that's all that I could remember should be included. It's now at the bottom of all of those pages (except for 36 Atlantae, which nobody's written up yet.)

I've also put together a http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... ue_Blazers]Blue Blazer portal, and three categories: http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... Underspace]Hacker Underspace, http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Category:Mads]Mads, and http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Category:SMOF]SMOF. (That last category is primarily writer avatars, but I tossed four NPCs into the mix for colour.) Since they're all character lists, the new categories are subcategories of the Characters category.

Now for the hard part: Why can't I get an infobox to display correctly on the page for Noah Scott? I've put the source text on the http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... Noah_Scott]discussion page - it looks like that when I try adding it to the main page, too. I didn;t have any trouble adding an infobox to the page for http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?title=Yayoi_Fujisawa]Yayoi Fujisawa... I give up; time to call it an evening.

Looks good Mal. I'll have to grab updated copies of the pages I'm responsible for once I'm not borrowing a computer anymore (about 1-2 days).

Thanks for hosting this for us, and here's hoping 2010 goes a little better than 2009.

I see that Mal's fixed the infobox. Thanks!

(I must have been tired to miss something that obvious...)

Okay, after taking a quick random walk through the new wiki, I'm a bit confused. Is it all carried over, or do we have to manually port stuff? I'm not
sure what you were asking of us, Fnord.

It looks like Mal has copied over most of the data. What we have to do now is create accounts on the new wiki, double-check that everything has been copied,
and fill in the blanks where it hasn't. (Considering the snapshot of the old wiki Mal used for the new wiki is a few months old, there probably are a few
gaps.)

After that, then we can start adding new stuff to the new wiki...

Two more portals: Greenwood and Grover's Corners. (Added to each appropriate page, of course.) This finishes porting the portals from the old wiki.

(Now that I'm finished with the portals, where's my cake? )

I've also put a skeleton character infobox on the writeups for Bob, Peggy, and Luna - Bob, that should be enough to get you going for the other GC inhabitants.

Edit: Hmmmmm... the http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... :ListUsers]account list is a bit sparse...

http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... rning_Star]LoGG Chapter 3 is finally up. So is the http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... wledgments]LoGG Acknowledgments Page, and http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... rning_Star]the LoGG Concordance has been updated. Quick Q: Will the wiki take audio clips? I'm working up a theme song for "Naze Nani Fenspace." Big Grin

-- James Nicoll
Quick A: Yes, but you have to click on a link to hear the audio.

Longer A: Upload the file to the wiki, then create a link to it with the format [media:naze_nani_fenspace.ogg] (assuming that's what it's called - change the filename as required) in the appropriate wiki page.

Can we get my user account (L. Goodhue) verified? I wanna upload an .ogg of "Naze Nani Fenspace" Big Grin And MAYBE my take on the theme to Star Trek.

Seems good. I put the theme song to "Naze Nani Fenspace" up on the "Television in Fenspace" page. Hopefully it's not TOO cheesy. Big Grin

Since we have infoboxes for every other class of page (characters, factions, planets), I put together an infobox for stars. Here's a filled-out example:
Quote:{{Starbox
|name=Tau Ceti
|image=
|image_size=
|caption=
|constellation=Cetus
|right ascension=01h 44m 04.0829s
|declination=-15° 56' 14.928"
|spectral type=G8 V
|distance=11.905 ± 0.007 ly
|other designations=Durre Menthor, Tau Cet, 52 Ceti, HD 10700, HR 509, BD-16°295, GCTP 365.00, GJ 71, LHS 146, LTT 935, LFT 159, SAO 147986, LPM 84, FK5 59, HIP 8102.
}}
I've also added boxes to the pages for the three Alpha Centauri stars and Epsilon Eridani - somebody (maybe me, unless someone else gets to them first) needs to do them for Delta Pavonis, Beta Hydri, Vega, and all those stars that don't have pages yet.
