Emergency Response in Fenspace

(need an intro bit)

== Calling for Help ==

The usual emergency channels (including CB channel 19, all Aviation Disaster frequencies, and all Maritime Distress frequencies) are monitored by volunteers throughout Fenspace. Most volunteers don't monitor all the distress channels, though.

The first-response desks at ''[[Stellvia], [[the Island],'' the Roadhouse, and [[Port Phobos] are typical of locations with large transient 'Danelaw populations and fully-deployed redundant internal cellular and VoIP networks. Any call placed to 110, 112, 119, 911, or 999 rings at the emergency desk in the station's Main Operations room. That desk's dedicated communications system incorporates a larger, non-portable version of the real-time translation device originally developed by [[the Professor] in May 2013 - this system understands over twenty-five languages, including Russian, English, Japanese, French, Spanish, Cantonese, and Klingon.

''Stellvia'''s emergency desk has direct connections to its equivalents at ''[[New Yavin], [[Wonderland],'' and other L5 stations, just in case one station picks up a stray signal from a ship in distress that's closer to another station (or an entire station needs help). The system at the Roadhouse has direct connections to its opposite numbers on ''[[Starbase 1]'', [[Port Phobos], [[Port Lowell], and [[Helium].

== Answering the Call ==

The most likely groups to respond to an emergency call are the [[Blue Blazers], the [[Sailor Armed Militia], and the [[Space Patrol], but other groups also respond to calls near their home bases.

(we need much more here, especially which group the Roughriders fall into - local or throughout Fenspace?)

== Paying for Help ==

Some groups operate on the principle of TANSTAAFL, and present anyone that they rescue with a bill for their services. Others (including the Sailor Armed Militia) consider Search and Rescue to be part of their equivalent of the Coast Guard and fund the service out of their faction's taxes, and a few (such as the Blue Blazers) do it because it's the right thing to do and pay for it out of their own pockets (or from donations).

Travelers are advised to purchase travel insurance, just in case.

(do we need more here?)

The Roughriders are Belt-based, so that gives a general area if nothing else.

Elsewhere, hmm... SHIELD takes care of the S&R duties in and around Kandor City & possibly elsewhere on Nearside depending on how resource-strapped the USCG is in Port Luna. Moonbase Alpha and the VVS share responsibility for Farside. L4 is covered by whichever branch of the US military is running TSAB this week.

Mars... Port Phobos has a emergency responder tugs to handle ships in trouble (to be seen in Hard Rain), Utopia Planitia has rescue shuttles on call (also to be seen in Hard Rain, assuming I can finish the damned thing). Port Lowell and Helium would have the same capability, I think.

Jupiter is covered by the Browncoats as noted in FTL Newsfeed #235. Assume there's a {whatever_dome} Sheriff/Fire/Rescue Department that covers their general area.

USCG is REALLY badly strapped on Luna. Effectively, "Marshall Dylan" and the Park Rangers for Tranquility Base National Park are it, everything else is Fendanes not quite ready to let go of their 'Danish homes and citizenship.

So not so much cutters as confiscated "terrorist gear" (read handwaved cars that TSAB didn't care about) from the early days painted over in USCG colors.

Hmmm. Pinafore's stint as a hospital ship and newsfeeds detailing such have made it kind of "trendy" to have been rescued by them. The posh surroundings don't hurt any either.

Nice, Duane. I'm sure the Beowulf is out there somewhere.

The Blue Blazers do respond to emergencies, of any kind. In the soup and in LEO, International Rescue is likely to respond as well. (While the Thunderbirds are part of the Blue Blazers greater network, they do operate independently.)

Any significantly large station - The Island, Stellvia, Greenwood, etc - will have its own internal law-enforcement agencies of whatever type the management thereof deems appropriate.

Greenwood, for example, uses uniformed GSS agents, and maintains a local-space patrol at all times. The space-based units will respond to distress signals from any source they can conceivably reach in time to provide assistance.

Proof positive that with sufficient motivation, you can make anything explode.

Except Grover's Corners. Its crew can be armed on almost no notice, but there's no formal "police" (other than Officer Friendly, of course).

The same might be said of the inhabitants of the Bunkhouse after it finishes completion. ...And now I have this image of the Blue Blazers engaged in a running fight through the halls of Savage Stadium. Right, another scenebunny to feed....

The Supers have an entire sub-faction devoted to S&R, dirtside or not. People tend to notice the MkII Iron Man suits the Silver Sentinels use.

If they've been let on, the bigger independent ships and stations will have a squad of Spartans who will do this. They normally get a stippend from the Cybers to offset the costs. Most of the other factions also have them for assistance.

On a personal basis, answering a distress call is normally done if at all possible. While it may not seem like they can do much, there are numerous reports of waved cars sharing air extending the lifetime of the damaged one long enough for further and better help to arrive.
Duane, thank you for pointing out the obvious. (D'oh!)

Cobalt, with a name like "Silver Sentinels", I hope those Iron Man suits have chrome finishes... and come with optional surfboards.

Another thing to consider is that the Roughriders keep at least one Peacemaker on patrol in the Belt at any given time - part of why Fenspace!Ben had them made is simply to cover those harder to reach spots where help is usually a long-time in coming.

When I said Mk.II, I meant Mk.II film style Iron Man Suits, so yeah. The surfboards... Nobody wants to push their luck with making those. Or been crazy enough to try skysurfing yet.

Well, one of the other songs off "Just Here For The Food" is the Cavaliers covering "Surfing With The Alien." The video has J. perched on top of World Watch One as it races a certain surfing comic-book character.
