The first indication came from a subforum on an out of the way hideout in the Metropolis network cluster. Only a few people, most of which were bored AIs, caught the odd little message before automatic buffers swept it up into digital oblivion.

Nice...

Meta, adding working magic (publicly) to Fenspace would be great for balancing out the setting, and giving some of the 'quieter' characters something to do. Taking the Shadowrunning story, Jet as the Street Sam/Adept, Ford as a bit of a Face with some Rigger, Cathy as the Hacker and Cortana as the AI... all you need is a mage and you'd have the perfect balanced Shadowrun party. Which is exactly where the idea for the original short bit came from...

Stories like that tend to be better, because it forces each character to play to their strengths, rather than having characters like Jet dominating the entire story and being everywhere.(Note Kentucky Cat, which suffers from it). Adding magic adds more possibilities for groups of characters to come together and find things they can't do, and need others for.

The level of upheaval UGE caused in SR though... the whole world's going to blame the sudden appearance of freak children on the people in space who've been turning themselves in to freaks for the better part of a decade. Reminds me of the old 'interesting times' curse.

What does the fan-on-the-street expect to see in a place devoted to hard-rock mining? Well, if he's a sci-fi sort, he expects guys in spacesuits with laser drills. But if he's a fantasy fan, he expects ... dwarves. And as every good fan knows, All Dwarves Are Vikings. Thus was born the concept of the First Viking Mead-Hall In Space, after a deadpan comment from Rei teased Chris on the "Viking Dwarves" one too many times. It's possibly the only place in Fenspace where you can go to be served beer and beef by burly bearded men in chainmail (even if they do stand eye-to-eye with a Dalek). The food is high quality without being haute cuisine, and runs heavily to beef products with a leavening of fish and a special vegetarian menu for Rei. Clientèle ranges from miners spending their bonuses to business guests in from 'Daneside to random wandering Fen.

When asked about Valkyries, Marsden replied that he only hires Elves for that position. (Two weeks later, the first waitress appeared at the restaurant. So far, Marsden has held good to his promise.)
At least the elves and dwarves have someplace to get an entry-level job...

Proof positive that with sufficient motivation, you can make anything explode.
So wait... you're saying that Shadowrun doesn't exist in Fenspace? Because any AI that gave that message even a moment's thought would probably immediately twig to the fact that a dragon, in some form or another, has appeared.

From my oppinion SR exists in Fenspace (as an RPG)...

which of course could be explained away by some immortals from the 4th/5th world releasing it to prepare the world for a shock... Wink

Another option would be that Fenspace is not the 6th world described in the books but it is one of the deep regions reachable through the metaplanes in SR... which would explain why dragons can do it.

It is the intent of the OP that, for purposes of this story fork, neither Shadowrun nor Earthdawn exist as RPGs within the shared cultural context of the Fenspace universe. This is primarily to knock out any future fourth wall-breaking shenanigans; we can do those to our heart's content in South Is Rising, no need to be all wink-and-nod in everything, y'know?

I.E, this is an infinity where some other set of Fantasy/Cyberpunk properties graced FASA's lineup, or Battletech and Star Fleet Battles did REALLY well for them.

As long as this stays Infinities and is not considered canon I am okay with it...

Or just find a way to integrate some of SRs background without erasing the RPG.

One more thought about a merger of SR and Fenspace...

In SR magic doesn't work (well) outside Earths magic field... its downright deadly for anything dual natured above the 100 km mark.
