== Appearance ==
Height: 7'11"  -  6'3" hunched over.
Gender: Male
Biomod: Werewolf
Weight: 280
Build: Athletic
Eye Color: Ice-blue
Languages: English
Hair/Fur/Skin color: Maltese ( Slate Grey ) with white underside. White hair pulled back into a warrior's braid.

== Biomod ==
Experimental Boskonian biomod to create disposable 'dog' soldiers. His appearance is that of a nearly eight foot tall werewolf.
== Personality, History, and Desc ==
Born June 5, 1984 as Ken Olds in Colorado. Dakota tends to be fairly laid back person with a long fuse on his temper.
'''History'''
I worked for the Boskonians and not by choice. How does one end up a unwilling boskonian? In my case it was the wrong sort of people taking notice of me. This was right after the launch of Grover's Corners I didn't have easy access to a vehicle to convert into a spacecraft. So I started quietly shopping around for a ride up with the holo tech I'd been working on. Got a 'great' offer, only to find out my error when I was already halfway to South America. Landed at a compound there that would end up being my 'gilded cage' for nearly a year before they figured out I was quietly sabotaging the holo tech in different ways.
They had all rights to shoot me for it, but they chose to use me in a biomod experiment. Fated to a fate worse then death, or so they thought. The coin of fate landed on the edge just to give everyone the finger. They got their biomod, I kept my free will, putting it to very good use to break out. Looted a vehicle and fled to space.

'''Desc'''
Dakota's biomod is that of a eight foot tall werewolf and thankfully not the big ugly teeth filled snarl Hollywood horror type. He's forced to hunch over in most places in fenspace to avoid smacking his head on things do to his height. His arms are slightly elongated with his legs being slightly shorter to bring both nearly the same length. This is combined with a elongated torso to let him move along on all fours. He retained his long hair from when he was human, it's pulled back into a loose warrior's braid.
'''Clothing and items'''
Broadshorts of different colors, aloha style shirt and a pair of highly modified sandals. Usually a belt or satchel of many pockets. A bag or two of Beggin' Strips.

Holo wrist computer - Functions much like any wrist computer except it's interface is completely holographic. Tied into a secondary holo projector built into a headset that lets him display text or text emoticons in order to communicate with people.
== Notable Mundane Attributes ==
Artist: passable 2D artist, not half bad 3D artist.
Cook: passable cook
Gamer: Former MMO and sandbox game junkie
Holo Artist: Had a knack for building holograms and getting the wave to produce holo projectors before his biomod.

==Handwavium Abilities==
'''''Dance little photons!''''' Dance I say! DANCE!: Very good hologram device builder and artist almost to blue hair levels.
'''''Just a scratch:''''' Dakota has a rather powerful regenerative abilities from his biomod at the cost of having to eat a lot of food after wards.
'''''Nose to the wind''''' His arms and legs are nearly the same length with a elongated torso. Letting him move on all fours when he needs to.Which is most of the time considering how cramped a lot of fen places are. This has also led to a cold nose where it doesn't belong more then once and the resulting abuse inflicted upon his person.
''''''''''
==Quirks==
'''''..and I must scream''''' His biomod has rendered him mute beyond sounds normally made by wolves.
'''''Scoobie Snacks''''' Much like catgirling machine victims and soda. He requires Beggin' Strips in his diet.
'''''Fumble Fingers''''' His fingers are thicker, stubby, and tipped in claws. Causing him to have issues with small objects and delicate work.
'''''Foo Dog''''' Driven to protect Fenkinder and temples if they are in danger.
'''''Sam Fisher''''' When lurking in dark areas his eyes glow blue. The darker the area, the brighter the glow.
'''''These cloths chafe''''' Finds he can't wear anything but a pair of baggy shorts and a light weight shirt for longer then a hour before he becomes very uncomfortable.

Holo Neon
Holo Neon is a store owned and operated by Dakota in Kendor City. Located across the street from Flynn's Arcade. Holo Neon offers prebuilt and custom holo displays for ads or events. The store interior mixes old general store with worn wooden shelving and supertech/cyberpunk elements. Carefully staggered displays break up the floor, but leave a unblocked of the products. Soft lighting is used throughout to help show off the active holograms more clearly. A counter at the back splits Dakota's workshop in the back from the rest of the store. While leaving the customer able to view him as he works.
Most of the prebuilt systems are a sleek, and compact low profile style. Anything from basic wall banners to full 3D area projectors. He also offers a line of portable projector systems from small hover platforms to deployable barricade systems.
Dakota is currently working with the owner of Flynn's Arcade to produce a line of holo arcade games with a retro theme.

Depending on the timeframe, this may be 'bought off' either by something like the neural induction helmets used by KoFen systems or by Dakota hiring a good cyberdoc to implant another means of communication.

He comes up early 2013, but I don't want to buy it off before 2018 at the earliest. Even then he'll still use text for the most part.

Not really, just what he types on the wrist computer appears in a hologram box above and in front of his head when trying to communicate with people. Projected from a headset he wears, this is only when he doesn't care that other people see it around him.

Based on a discussion I had with Dakota in the IRC... this might become a new part of the wiki page of Jenga. What do you think?

#############

The great hall

Twice every year, for Christmas and for the anniversary of the Catgirl Industries’ foundation, the catgirls assembled a large hall out of unused parts of the space station. The room has to be quite large because all catgirls want to have a party together with their guests. While the anniversary party keeps the room mostly empty for dancing, the Christmas one always featured a large holographic tree in the center. The catgirls could not afford a real one in 2015 when they had Christmas together the first time).

Of course a few days later, the module parts were cleaned up, disassembled and reassembled into their original modules. At least until this was the plan the catgirls followed until 2019.

For Christmas 2019, one of the guests of the catgirls were Dakota. Being a famous holo-artist, Dakota and the catgirls who designed the tree in 2019 had a great time, talking about former experience with their tech and brainstorming about new ideas.

It hasn’t been recorded what exactly happened during the night (and Cortana says her sensors were disrupted), but at one point Dakota and a group of catgirls began to tear up the holographic projectors in the hall and started working on them. A long and very blue-furred night later, the tree was working again and everyone got his well earned sleep.

But in the morning all kind of chaos started in the great hall, one of the catgirls had slept in the branches of the tree! While nobody was sure how, the projections of the system had become solid, a technology both unmatched by Dakota or Catgirl Industries. After a short and careful analysis the catgirls decided to keep the great hall together until they had a clue how the new holographic system was working. Because of this the great hall became a permanent part of Jenga for many years.
As I recall, that's about when some other Infinities have the Trekkies developing "solid" holograms... maybe they bought the tech from Jenga instead of developing it in-house.

Could be the Trekkies got invited in to help reverse engineer the tech. Thus got to be one of the first groups to put it to use after $plot-months/years of work.

I can live with both options... *G*

the Trekkies and CI have worked together on some things since CI developed the Exocomps, so it could easily be a combined research project that finally allowed the Trekkies, CI and Dakota to field the first "mass produced" hardlight system.

(edit)
My idea was always that CI bought some 'soft' holoprojectors from the Trekkies in 2015-2020 for Jenga. So the basic building blocks of the hardlight system might be a combination of Trekkie, CI and Dakota tech.

(edit2)
Revised end for the text block:

It took a combined team of Trekkies and catgirls with the help of Dakota a lot of time to replicate the system, leading to the Trekkie ‘solid holograms’ and Catgirl Industries/Dakotas ‘Hardlight’ technology.

----

I will see that I write a little bit about the tech itself, so we can get a Fenspace Infinities wiki entry for it.

Hardlight Holograms
»I am not sure Mira ever noticed what was wrong when she woke up. Until we told her that she had been sleeping on the branches of our holographic Christmas Tree over the night!«
- Cathy in early 2020, telling a story about the Christmas Party some days ago

»Emergency Medical Holographic Program AK-1 ready for duty... wait, what do you mean, you have still a problem with solid holograms? Wake me up when you got it running you fools!«
- heard during the development of the first room sized Solid Hologram projector on Starbase 1

History

Holographic technology has always been a part of most Fenspace factions. Handwavium allowed the Fen to go from two-dimensional projection to free-floating three dimensional shapes within a months, something that has angered the Daneverse entertainment industry a lot.

But while three dimensional projections became cheap quickly, the results were still without substance, free floating images that could be seen, but not touched. Several factions and research institutions worked on solving this problem without success for years. But then, a blue-hair moment pushed the technology of Fenspace a little bit forward.

During a Christmas party in 2019 at Jenga with lots of partying, a group of catgirls and the Holo artist Dakota suddenly began to rip apart the projectors of the holographic Christmas tree and began to work on it. Like most blue-hair moments, it couldn’t be reconstructed later what had happened during the night, but the Trekkie built holo-projectors had gained a new quality during the night, the projection had become solid.

Unfortunately nobody had a clue how the system did achieve this effect.

It took a combined research team of Trekkie hologram specialists and catgirls from Catgirl Industries (with regular help and advice from Dakota) more than a year to replicate the effect with a new prototype.

The technology

Hardlight system (or Solid Holograms as the Trekkies call them usually) are a more complex kind of projection system that can give their output a solid surface. Depending on the complexity of the projection system this ability can be anywhere between the projection of smooth walls and a Star Trek style holodeck.

Most Hardlight projectors are very limited in the amount of force they can apply on real objects within their area of effect. You can easily touch Hardlight projections, but pressing too hard will let you slide through the projections. Most times this disrupts the effect of a solid surface for all projections closeby.

Quirks:
  • A lot of Hardlight holodeck systems have issues with their safety protocols.

Trivia:
  • It took the Trekkies several years to finish the first Holodeck
  • Catgirl Industries still use the first Hardlight system at Jenga for their Christmas parties
The problem I see is that IIRC in the Wave Convoy stories the trekkies had holodecks in 2011-2012, and The Jason had 'Hardlight' tech in 2015 (used in the 2nd Phobos Annual, combining force fields with standard holo-tech). While we can restrict Hardlight tech to specific items/individuals, by the point this supposedly happens someone will have come up with something like this (for general use) already.

It could have at least one of the pillars of commercial tech (cheaper, with faster and better being the other ones), thus being more widespread.

I look ed up the Holodeck mentioned in Surfing with the Alien 2. It contains the following text:
Quote:There was that smile again, and I was wrong - it's not the same every time, or maybe there's just something different about it 'in person' so to speak. "Thank you, but I didn't mean the model so much as the food. The holodeck isn't advanced enough for it - right now most people still connect with a monitor and keyboard, though there is a physical holo chamber - but someday we'll get touch and taste and smell down as well. When that happens, I want to be ready, with things that taste and smell right, but I don't have any experience what "right" is, even if the chemical compounds and receptors are easy enough to mimic. I hope it's not rude, but I was hoping you could help me with a human experience."

It seems the Trekkies used to call it holodeck, even when they had neither touch, taste and smell running...

I could not find your other reference inside the 2nd Phobos Annual, maybe you can give me a pointer to the quote that mentions Jasons holotech?
From Part 2 of http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... nal_Part_2]the 2nd Phobos Annual:

Quote:The battle was ended, and I stopped the blond holograms that I'd been using as a distraction for the others. I was starting to get a bit tired - I'd been going pretty much non-stop except for food breaks, and a long hot shower to remove the effects of the Kawaii grenade followed by a long nap were starting to become real temptations. Might as well consider wrapping it up soon. It's not as though I'd come to win the thing - just to have fun.

I had my kids put a thin, invisible forcefield shell around myself, or most of myself. It left my joints free, and most of my head. What it SHOULD do would be to limit the Kawaii effect I was giving off...at least for a few minutes, since there were far fewer areas exposed to radiate the pheromones, or whatever was causing it. I hoped. There were a lot of Jesses in there still. A quickly whispered conference and a bit of setup, and we entered the battlefield.
I could swear that someone said that the 2nd Phobos Annual wasn't quite inline with canon anymore. I could be thinking of a different story though.

Also from the same document:

Quote:Out of somewhere, a dozen busty blondes appeared, thoroughly distracting several of the Marines.... and several of the other people in the room, too. Those who had time to pay attention might have noticed the way shots kept going through them... if anyone had had the time to notice. Some did, and kept their concentration...

CG, are you really sure about your two sources for earlier "solid holograms"? BOTH texts say that its not solid holo tech...
Well, I'll admit that it'd been a while since I'd read the Wave Convy stories, so my miss-remembering about the Holodecks (given WC and his host were both virtual, they had clipping enabled and thus the appearence of solidity) is probably to be expected.

However, the Jason is playing with force fields as well as regular holotech. http://www.fenspace.net/index.php5?titl ... vitational]2nd Phobos Annual Part 1 has this:
Quote:Even as the claymore bomb exploded in a horrendous mess of strings in my direction, Kinto'un was already moving backward as fast as the AIs could drive it. Still, I'd been too close to avoid it entirely. I wound up on the opposite side of a gigantic tangle of silly string, my left arm caught up in it. "Blast it, Noah! I'm getting to HATE bombs. Somebody managed to tag me with a bloody Kawaii grenade earlier. I still reek of the thing...and it seems to make women view me as adorable. As in 'I will hug him and squeeze him and call him George!' adorable. I've been running from overgrown Elmyras for the last hour." Noah grinned at that. Unforunately, Leda was starting to get that same look in her eyes. Hrm. "Chakra scalpel...." A glowing green blade extended from my fingertips and I cut my arm free.
The 'Chakra scalple' could be both (the previous quote I used shows both holotech and force field tech), AND The Jason gets out what appears to be a copy of a green lantern ring at the end of the Phobos story. This is 4-ish years before your holotech option which would most likely be a single emiter system.

Still, it's something to keep in mind.

I think its okay that Jason was working with Holo- and Forcefield-Tech in 2015. Maybe it should even be mentioned that quite some Fen worked on combining this two systems. But its a long and stony way from working with forcefields and holoprojections to a hard hologram.

I must admit I am a little bit skeptic about a "Green Latern" ring... especially because it never showed any effect except style.

I think it's becoming a meta question... when do we (as the writers) want Fenspace to get a hardlight holo system? Our current material on the wiki/forum does not give us a good date.
