So who would Mag go to for help on a magical engineering project - specifically, a magic-based untraceable cellphone/voice link?

Well, if you are talking about in-game contacts for help, I think I know of tow who might could do that, but their names escape me for the moment. Gimme a few
and I'll see if I can pull them up.

I read some of the links off of Sofaspud's awesome collected list - and I think Space Mage or Alexis Morgan would be the go-to-gal for this.

In-game NPCs? My first guess would be Azuria.

If you're talking about in The Legendary (and associated groups)... I'm guessing possibly Looney Toons or Alexis Morgan, as both of them are described
in the other skills thread as having technomagical expertise, which is what that sounds like.

ETA: if it involves tech in any way... avoid Yukiyo. [Image: smile.gif] Oh, and, nice simul-posting there.

I'm leaning towards Alexis, if for no other reason than to roll with a nice 'full of nothing but females!' gag I found just.. lying around the
base..

Alexis: ... Should I be worried?

Hmmm. Two things to keep in mind if you ask Alexis to make something.

1. The faster you need it, the larger the end product will be. And the more of it that will be put together from random bits that are lying around. (Even if
fabricating new stuff would be easy.)

2. Requests that bring ginger ale with them are more likely to be heeded.

-Morgan. #1 is more important than #2. But hey, I like running jokes.
And would she have already developed/put into use a 'secure secret comm'?

I'm thinking a magic cellphone, basically.

Nothing quite like that I think. Most of the communications security she works with is based on high-powered encryption. (And sometimes actual couriers, though
that's more as a way to breach otherwise insoluable communications barriers than as a security measure.)

"Random bits that are lying around" is more likely to refer to "whatever junk's in the salvage rack that no one else wants". Which
would be a contributing factor to the size thing.

-Morgan.
Hrm.

Given a half-dozen Nokia 6103b, and six
hours, could I get an untraceable handheld comm widget out of Alexis? It'd be a given that he'd be willing to pay* for the final product, as well as for anything involved in it's creation, because a) this is a rush job, and b), this
is going to a Non-Legendary member.

Temporally speaking, this would occur on Mag's initial meeting with The Legendary, which I'm taking the liberty of defining as 'towards the end
of' a 'lengthy campaign for Portal Corps' (the Praetorian AV mission arc)

*(At no point will Mag be poor - in fact, he's going to be 'moderately wealthy'
enough that 1000$ worth of cellphones isn't going to phase him, if the final product is worthwhile)

For what it's worth, Space Mage probably isn't the best to recruit for a serious engineering project. She's a technophile, but definitely a user rather than someone who actually knows how to pop the case off something.

Furthermore, in D&D terms, she's more a Sorcerer than a Wizard - she doesn't actually cast defined spells, she just warps magic to her will. And most of what she does taps on the rather nebulously defined 'collective force of human creativity'. The offshoot of this is, she never does the same magic trick the same way twice. Not exactly. True, she can make magic items much more easily than most any other magic-user. She just needs to visualize it, and it happens.

The thing is...while said item would almost certainly work, the devil's in the details. There's the question of what else the item would do, especially if the original intent was...not precise.

They're not bugs, they're undocumented features.

(Example: I'm not sure if he's decided on a different backstory, but at one point Rev Dark proposed that Space Mage might have accidentally created Sen Sen Mew Mew. And if you've teamed with Rev's catgirl, you'll...see how much of a scary prospect that is.)

Well, having Alexis be willing to do it shouldn't be a problem if you can put the problem to her in a way that will pique her interest. (And, as you've
piqued the author's interest, that shouldn't be too hard.) Ginger ale also helps, but if they've just met I guess Mag won't know how to bribe
her yet. She might ask him to bring her some while she works though... '.'

As for being able to pull it off... well, I thought about it some while at work, and I think I've figured out a way that would suit her style.

(Style? Well, can't let her be able to build *anything*. Best way I can think of to restrict it is that I have to be able to come up with some way to have
it make sense for the way she does things. And she can't just do something like exploit the Law of Sympathy, because I decided that magic doesn't
*work* like that in her homeline. Also, it's better if it's something that suits her lazy-engineer philosophy.)

Next question I guess is, do you want me to write any dialogue for her for this? (Honestly I'd rather... Partly because I'm rather protective of
Alexis, since she is, you know, *me*, and partly because I'm overly amused by her final words of advice on using the units. '.' )

In any case, I'm off tomorrow, and can probably get online at most times if you wanted to talk about it.

-Morgan.
mmm, sounds like a plan. I'll drop you what _I_ have and we can shoehorn in what you'd like.

must have some Alistair, also. always needs More Penguin
