Okay, between bonus pay at work, christmas monies, overtime worked, and getting my taxes done in a couple weeks, I have some extra funds right now. I'm
hoping to upgrade my computer's video card and ram and am looking for ideas on what to get. Right now I have an ATI Radeon x600 and 1GB of ram. I'm
sure that you who play with me in CoX notice I take a bit to load, and I've got my graphics settings at one notch below 'recommended' at the
moment.
What I am looking for is enough to enable me to use the PC I have for a couple more years. The processor covers my needs and HDD space isn't an issue. I
want a video card that will let CoH look nice and enough ram to make it run as smoothly as possible. I'm also not necessarily looking for the top of the
line that's currently available... just something that'll work out well for a couple years.
So, any ideas or suggestions?
I suggest you wait for Wire and talk to him. His g33k-fu is strong.
Well, I am no tech-wizard, but I would recommend a Nvidia card (a 9 Series most likely) over ATI. From a casual perusal of the interwebs I belive the current
Top-of-the-Lines are the Nvidia 9800 GX2, and the ATI Radeon HD4830. One other thing though, I would recommend, aside from upgrading your Graphics, is get
another stick of RAM for your system. I believe you can get 1, 2, and 4GB sticks depending on your price needs.

If it makes any difference, I understand that the "Physix" technology that was such a big deal a year or two back, with COX having code specifically
intended to exploit it, turned out to be just a variety of code itself running on a standard GPU. Nvidia bought out Physix, I have been told, and is now
including it as part of the higher end cards.

Be wary of the Geforce 8800's .. they run smokin hot and pretty much require aftermarket cooling to get them to run smoothly =)

Well, budget wise, I'm willing to spend what I need. I was expecting for it to be somewhere between 150-250 dollars, but I have no problem if it costs
more. This is an investment for me.
As for the slot... According to the users guide for my PC, the available slots inside are:
Three 33-MHz PCI card slots
One PCI Express x1 card slot
One PCI Express x16 card slot
One PCI Express x4 card slot
looks good to me - and the retail box has the power connector adaptors, so as long as your power supply can handle the load, you should be good to go!

Whoo! Should be here Tuesday, and yay for employee discount!
Now... onto ram. I know what I need, just seems to be out of stock on Amazon... wonder if it's available locally at a store. *goes back to searching*
Yeah, that's essentially what I now have in my system. Runs great so far!
Okay, halfway done. Got the RAM upgraded to 3GB after some momentary heart attacks when my computer wouldn't turn ON after I first put the memory in.
Have ordered the video card and also a new power supply (since I found out the supply I current have isn't strong enough for the new video card) and they
should arrive on Tuesday.
Then I get to working on cleaning out my hardrive of unnecessary programs... starting with Nortons Anti-Virus. I haven't been able to launch CoX without
having to completely disable Nortons for a long time.
