Okay. I think I understand enough about computers to know my current machine is *spit* HP "blackboxed." Model s5310y. [I asked a tech at BestBuy and he seemed to think that HP dicked around with the Power Supply making it difficult to use an aftermarket one for my (already known difficulty for getting a new vidcard) slimline case. Unless I was misunderstanding him and he was stating that HP has asked Best Buy to not do the power supply mods for people.]
I'm contemplating getting the parts to assemble a modest system on my own, hoping to spend... not terribly much. See If I can do better than what I got for $500 - 600 or so.
What is my "You're a ****ing idiot if you don't have THIS" list?
In before "make it a Linux system/buy an Apple" a-haha, no.
Unlike last year, I may actually follow through on advice.

I'd be glad to help out, Fox. As for the HP thing? Really big retail chains in the US are no longer allowed to do work on HP computers legally. It's not a big deal for small shops unless an HP person stops by to serve legal action.
I've been looking up parts for my computer as of late. I'll post when I put a list together for you.
PCPer usually has a good starting point:

They keep it up to date as new things come out, which is always nice.
If you are looking to game with the box, I would take the extra $100 headroom your price window offers and get the GTX 460 instead of the SAPPHIRE 100287L

Had planned on staying with Nvidia chips. *great site. working up the gumption to place the orders, and seeing if I find anything nice to pad here and there.
Black cases are BLEH.

you can eliminate the extra CPU cooler, the stock unit that comes with the AMD chip should be sufficient, unless you're planning on overclocking.

Well, since I really don't know thing one about overclocking... It's just the Processor is sold as already having its cores unlocked... does that make a difference?

not really.
It's kinda like.. oh hell.
I don't have a metaphor for the scenario. But if you don't know what it is in detail and plan on specifically doing it, you don't need to worry about it.
