Oh, I'm enjoying the story. I also suspect there is a plan for the SG-1 crew to get to shine at some point. But so far it has largely been, "Aw man, you poor guys have no idea what they heck is going on do you?"
The bit you mention is I suspect intended to build up a threat that neither side would be able to successfully take on without the other side's help.
