So... a certain element of John Biles's "Friendship is Adventuring" collided in my brain with the fact that the VA who does Celestia also plays Cheerilee. And produced a bunny.
What if... in order to avoid the kind of thing that happened in "Eternal," Celestia has "normal" ponies as avatars, or sort of siamese soul-twins, to keep her connected to mortal reality as it flows past her. This could take many shapes, including where one or both parties have no idea what's going on.
And... what if Luna had a similar arrangement? And what if Nightmare Moon was the result of that connection being broken, or damaged, somehow? How many poinies might have lived and died over the millenium of the Banishment with a feeling of missing something that they just couldn't put a hoof on, and spent many sleepless nights gazing at the moon and yearning for something they couldn't name?
And what happened to some random pony, somewhere in Equestria, when the Elements purged Luna of NMM, and suddenly that connection "went live" again?

Luna Eclipsed is still my favorite episode, but the finale was f*cking awesome. I can't wait to see what the fandom does with the characters introduced in the finale.

There are few things that can beat having watched the season finale in a room with 40 other bronies. It was awesome. Afterward I played in a pony Pathfinder one-shot, which was also awesome, but not quite on the same level.
And Luna's line at the very end was excellent.
So, now I'm imaging the Changeling life-cycle. I'd bet they treat their young in the same way cuckoos do, placing the infant in a normal pony family. The infant than feeds off the the parent's love until it matures, after which it vanishes, reclaimed by the Changlings, if the 'foster' family is lucky. They then insert themselves into existing relationships, usurping one of the partners and feeding off him or her, as we saw Queen Chrysalis doing to Shining Armor, sometimes keeping the usurped partners alive to torment them with the knowledge of what is happening to their loved one, and that the loved one cannot tell the difference between the true loved one and the Changeling. Once they have stolen enough misdirected love, Changelings can mate with each other and use that stolen love to create a new infant, and the cycle begins anew.
Does that sound reasonable?
(I've also come up with a viable hunting strategy for the cockatrice shown in the show, which I've been told is rather nightmare fuel-ish. I have a strange imagination sometimes.)

Some thoughts about how things went down with the various princesses: [Obsessive Fan Mode: On]
If Celestia and Luna are physical godesses of the sun and moon respectively, then Cadance seems to be a young godess of love. I say young as she looked sort of teenaged in Twilight's flashbacks. As a young and inexperienced godess of a non-physical concept, she lost a physical confrontation with the Changeling queen. Said queen was then chowing down on the power of a pony with magical muscle on Twilight's level and love for the goddess of love herself, converting that love power to a physical/magical form which let her take on Celestia.
As a side note: I suspect Celestia wasn't expecting that, didn't bring her "A-game" to the first exchange, and paid the price for trying to brute force things sloppily. She's clever and I would expect her to fight with cleverness as well as power when she's serious.
Second side note: I wonder if Nightmare Moon managed to take Celestia out of the picture in the pilot becasue she had been spending that 1000 years thinking of tactics and tricks to fight someone of Celestia's power. I wonder if this would have resulted in a smackdown by Luna if she had woken up earlier.
Third side note: Either Luna is a really sound sleeper or she has chaimbers somewhere other than Canterlot Castle and teleports over when she needs to. That second option would explain why she was still socially isolated about a year later and why we don't see her that often.
Back to the episodes: At the end, things moved from a physical confrontation to something firmly in the realm of the power of love. That's Cadance's turf as she showed in her victory and semi-ascension with her hubby-to-be.
I still have questions about how these crazy-powerful winged unicorns come into being and how many of them are there. Are they "just" a different breed of pony? A one-in-millions quirk when latent unicorn and pegasus genetics kick in at the same time? Something that "regular" ponies can become with enouogh power?

The most popular option is the third, with a huge number of variations large and small: it's the most powerful mortal form of a Pony Immortal (in a setting where Quests for Immortality are relatively common); one Pony of each kind cooperate in a ritual that makes all three into Alicorns; a Pony undergoes a revelatory/traumatic experience that awakens the Spark of Godhood slumbering within every Pony; and so on. One story even has Twi turn herself into one with an incautiously-modified butterfly wings spell, but I don't count that one because it ignores Earth Pony strength.

On the subject of Cadance's powers, I'd bet that she can only restore and reinforce other ponies. Onscreen we se her 'buff' the love of those two ponies in the flashback, and supercharge Shining Armor. Also, everyone found the idea that Cadance was healing Shiny's headache believable, so the idea of her only having those sort of spells, none of which would help her if she is on her own, quite palatable.

It is interesting that the show changed from "friendship is the ultimate magic" to "love is the ultimate magic"
Now what we got is a prince-in-all-but-name whose power is shielding/defending in love with a princess whose power is love. A dark evil queen wants to steal that love for herself, and brainwashes the prince into focusing it on herself. After a grueling trek the princess must use her love to awaken the prince, and after a magic powerup that restores them physically and spiritually, they blast the evil queen to kingdom come. Haven't we seen this already?
Now what we got is a prince-in-all-but-name whose power is shielding/defending in love with a princess whose power is love. A dark evil queen wants to steal that love for herself, and brainwashes the prince into focusing it on herself. Well, romantic love is just friendship with an upgrade, so it still works. I like more the idea that the bad guy feeds on love, but they didn't try to go with "Our love is stronger because it's true!" Chrysalis was beaten because she seems to have stopped feeding on SA at that point, so he was able to 'redirect' his love back to Cadance, where it should have been going in the first place.
Alternately, the energy from him was cut off when Cadance woke him up…
