Good news: I'm taking a week's vacation in sunny Florida. My parents bought a condo in Venice, FL, and I'll be enjoying their hospitality on the
beach.
Yes, I do mean ON the beach.
Bad news: The laptop I'm taking with me can't run CoX, so, no ninja for a week.
Good news: My job is secure despite the fact that we're losing the account I have been servicing since starting there.
Bad news: they're restricting internet access. Severely. To the point where I may not be able to get, well, anywhere, including my email, from the office.
Meh.

More bad news: My laptop screen cracked itself rather badly while in transit. Sigh.
Any suggestions on ways to repair/replace, or would it be cheaper these days to just buy new?

Ebay it. You can usually find replacement parts, and even total screen replacements for a fraction of the cost. Then if you have any skill at it, you could
swap out the screen, or get someone with some skill at it to do it. Usually you can find the instructions on how to do it on the manufacturer's website.
Usually it's a matter of partially disassembling the plastic cover around the hinge joint, removing the keyboard, disconnecting a few really thin plugs
onto the motherboard, and removing the screws that hold the screen to the mainboard section.
Adding the replacement screen is just doing all this in reverse.

OTOH, I have a chance to persuade Dad to throw in for a new MacBook. The question is, if I do, would the base model run CoH well enough.

well I was running CoX in bootcamp off of my 3 year old macbook pro (2 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB Ram, Radeon X1600) which makes the new Macbooks point at laugh at my
laptop in the cpu/graphics department. And I was able to consistently do 'performance' without problems.
So I can guarantee that it will run under bootcamp, and probably better with the new client that is being released.

If ya can wait til the new year, you can see the Specs req'd on the Mac Client for CoH, if you want to go for a new lappy.
If you're a tinkering type, look about on Ebay and places for a FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) Screen for your current one.
...I'd play with replacing the screen regardless of if you get a new lappy, but I like to tinker with stuff. Especially when there's something broken
already.

Well, we lucked into a bit of a sale. And Dad decided to pay for the whole thing. Toshiba Satellite L300, 2-ghz dual-core processor, 4 gig RAM, and a fairly
modest graphics card. Under $600.
Only drawback is, it comes with Vista.

Most current Vista licenses currently allow rollback to XP - if the laptop drivers are supported, you should be in like Flynn.
UGH!!! Norway, you got a problem. That being that Toshiba is one of the most notorious companies out there for not providing XP compatible drivers for Vista
laptops.
