- DeputyJones - 10-26-2012 *Concerned* Uh, can you be a bit more specific, robkelk. I don't want to step on any toes - let alone the kind that can sue the shirt off my back. Is it the NGE screenshots? Also... Okay, okay - no big payday! ^_^ I can take a hint. And, admittedly *Dr. Evil voice* Forty BILLION Dollars *end voice* was kind of a Convenient Plot Device(tm). I blame it on being a green newbie and trying to hard to make a catch-all for any question of "how do they have that?" Though that does mean I need a new origin story for the SEELE Council characters. Hmmm... I guess they started meeting one another at some bar or another in Port Lowell around late 2008...Drunken ramblings became They debated the pros and cons of pooling their resources into what eventually became the SEELE Council...James "Jimmy" Blake's ultrasonice lasers gave them what was at first just a cozey base of operations (future NERV HQ) in Pavonis - they blame a beer-laden 007 marathon for the 'hollowed out volcano' idea...initial concept of the NERV Foundation starts around 2009 as their start-up capital funds build up from the sale of vulcanocrete to places like Mos Eisley, Port Lowell, and Helium... You know, I'm starting to like the sound of this more and more than my original version. - M Fnord - 10-26-2012 Quote:*Concerned* Uh, can you be a bit more specific, robkelk. And thanks anyway for the warning, rob - 'better safe than sued' and all that, eh? - DeputyJones - 10-27-2012 Presently working on story for both the 'origin of Pavonis' and the big reveal for New Port City at CorusCon: Alex, as SEELE Chairman, is being interviewed by R. Walter Cronkite for ZNN in the lead-up to the convention several days before it starts where, to a bit of confusion, the NERV Foundation has requested time prior to the closing ceremonies to make an unspecified anouncement. During the interview, Alex takes the oportunity to announce that, after ten years as chairman, he is stepping down, though he'll still be CEO of Cyberdyne. Rather than the story taking place during the interview, however, it takes place afterwards while Alex is watching the interview at a hotel in Coruscant. While watching it he has flashbacks about how everything started. Sound good? Also, I'm a little curious about what's thought about the Elysium Cooperative. Does it screw up anybody's ideas-in-the-works or is it good to go? - robkelk - 10-27-2012 I've finally read the revised text (in post #18)... It's... a big place. Very big. As big as Kandor City, and without as large a labour supply to build the place. And dug-in rather than built on the surface, which takes even more labour. And the technology is very advanced for Season 0 and Season 1. Might I suggest scaling the arcology back substantially for the 2009-2013 period, and have what you've written be the state of affairs as of 2023 after a decade of expansion and innovation? Oh, and a few minor points: Quote:Seemingly all fantasy-minded short of the Wizards and D&Ders decided to band together to claim a homeland for themselves on the Red Planet.Well, there are also the gamers at Crystal Seattle, the Renfaire folks at 4860 Gubbio, and the dwarf bar "Valhalla" on Greenwood Station... and The Watch (the Discworld fen) practically everywhere. Quote:Due to a bit of secretly purposeful micro-managing by several SEELE Council members, Toyota and Ford each opened shops on the same day at the same time on 24 May 2019 on Copperhead Road in New Port City across from the Rubber Duck Trucking Company –they each claim right of “first car dealership off of Earth.”I thought we already had a car dealership somewhere... (goes and looks) ...apparently not. (I do vaguely remember an idea that StellviaCorp was going to get into that business, it being a logical extension of the trading they already do, but it looks like I never actually did anything with the idea. I snooze, I lose.) For now, though, in light of HRogge making a new post for the 'gas station' story, here's the beginning of my story. ~~~ “I believe the power to make money is a gift of God … to be developed and used to the best of our ability for the good of mankind. Having been endowed with the gift I possess, I believe it is my duty to make money and still more money and to use the money I make for the good of my fellow man according to the dictates of my conscience.” – John D. Rockefeller ~ It was an average hotel room, though just over a mere decade ago calling any room with a window looking out upon the arguably most beautiful of the Sol System’s gas giants ‘average’ would have raised more than a few eyebrows. A lamp was on by the sole bed in the room as its lone occupant watched the television. WALT: “Hello, I am R. Walter Cronkite, and this is the ZNN ‘Interview with a Fen’ hour. In this lead-in the convention, joining me for tonight is CEO of Cyberdyne Systems and Chairman of Pavonis’ SEELE Council, Mister Alex Xanatos. Thank you for coming, Alex.” ALEX (smiling): “It’s my pleasure, Walter.” WALT: “Cutting right to the chase, the NERV Foundation has started a bit of a buzz with its sudden request for time at the start of the convention to make an announcement – one that the foundation refuses to expand upon. What’s all of this about?” ALEX (grinning and wagging a figure): “Ah! Ah! Ah! That’s got to wait for a couple more days. All I will say about it now is that, what with the recent events in Saturnian space casting their shadow on things, we on the council thought some good news is exactly what doctor ordered to brighten up the convention. I’m afraid that really is all I can say.” WALT: “I see…” Back on the bed its occupant, the same man being interviewed on the TV in fact, chuckled a bit. ‘We on the council?’ Try less than half of it…” *FLASHBACK* “You can’t be serious!” a female, Japanese-accented void snapped. “Uh-uh. No way. Forget it,” declared the man with the Deep South accent. “It’s nowhere near finished! You all know that!” whined the man dressed like Cool Hand Luke at the same time as the others. “I’m curious why you would bring this up,” said the only one to wait a moment to speak, a business-suited, bun-haired brunette. “I never really had an opinion on the matter, you know that. But wasn’t the whole ‘build the city in secret and make our big mark on history’ thing your plan to begin with, Alex? “Yes, it was,” agreed one of those across the table from the other four. He could probably pass for David Xanatos from Disney’s Gargoyles if he weren’t blonde. “But things change – we all know that, too,” countered the other man, his mix of Asian and Caucasian features indicating his mixed parentage. “And in this case the change was that attack on Pan,” continued the bluenette next to him. “That’s going to be the daneside story de jure for the next couple of weeks. The danes’ correspondents already being on Mimas is probably the only reason they haven’t called off their coverage of CorusCon for security reasons. But that gives us on opportunity.” “’Opportunity,’ Lana?” asked the good old boy. “Yes, Jimmy, an opportunity,” affirmed Alex. “By revealing New Port City at the start of the convention, we counter the negative views about Pan with something positive.” There was pause. “That does make a certain amount of sense,” admitted the Yamato Nadeshiko in the kendo-ka uniform. “Biwa!” snapped Cool Hand. “The only parts the city completed are Gakuen-cho and Wilson Heights! Admittedly, Academytown is a small town unto itself – we did make sure to mimic the Mahora campus as much as possible – but that and a residential district does not a city make!” “O-“ started Alex. “-The- O,” interrupted The O. “Sorry. The O, are all the utilities for the city hooked up and prepared – water, electrics, internet, sewage, all of it?” “Yes, but-” “Then what’s the problem?” asked the bun-haired woman. The O sighed. “I was kinda starting to look forward to the big reveal, you know, Mary?” The woman smiled. “I think we all were to some extent or another.” Lana frowned. “What’s your problem with an early opening, Jimmy” He sighed. “You know me, darlin’. I just hate to open up when caldera still looks like a work in progress – which it is! The greenery under the dome is only grass in SOME places! Most of it is just lichens and moss.” “It’s not like we’re reliant on the flora for oxygen. It might eventually be capable of that, yes, but the plan is and has always been to at least supplement the natural oxygen-carbon dioxide process with the arcology’s life support systems,” pointed out Alex. He looked to his friend of the multiple ethnicities. “Kazuo?” “You’re right. And if you’re worried about what it’ll look like to others, The O, don’t forget that Kandor and Marduk each started the same way. Not exactly a bad set of example to follow.” The O grumbled unintelligibly but nodded. “All right, I’ll go along with it.” Alex looked around the table. “Does anyone else have any objections to an early big reveal?” Several shook their heads. “Okay, then. As Chairman of the SEELE Council I declare the motion to reveal the existence of New Port City and its grand opening at CorusCon to be on the table for a vote. All against?” Silence. “All for?” “Aye,” came the unanimous if not exactly enthusiastic response. *END FLASHBACK* - DeputyJones - 10-28-2012 Very important question for a later part of this story: What is the feasibility of 'destructive downloads' in Fenspace, particularly at the point in time immediately around the Battle of Boskone Prime? - HRogge - 10-28-2012 DeputyJones Wrote:Very important question for a later part of this story:There were a few as accidents... people waking up as vehicles after dealing with too much handwavium and dying in the process. - DeputyJones - 10-29-2012 Without giving anything away, around the timframe previously given, would it be possible for a bad guy to escape OGJ custody by destructive downloading his mind into a computer and transmiting it to a pre-prepared 'backup' body? Also, here's the latest version of the three articles. ~~~ Pavonis Arcology Pavonis Mons in Tharsis is home to not one but several interconnected, quasi-subterranean communities that operate under the banner of the Pavonis Arcology. All of them were built and are still supported and partly managed by the NERV Foundation. They are each a part of the multi-phase plan, Project RED EARTH, that is the main focus of the foundation’s Natural Environment Re-creation Venture. It is worth mentioning that, similar to Canada, Pavonis is bilingual in its signage and education: English and Japanese, reflecting its founders. ![]() Flag of Armitage III Mars, used by Pavonis Using Binford’s super-hardy construction material vulcanocrete – a ceramic material made up of the lava rock of Pavonis herself mixed with ground-up quartz and something else (generic plaster mixed with pure handwavium; basic formula open domain as of 2017) – the NERV Foundation successfully carved several Martian settlements into the extinct volcano. While originally rather bare of settlers who didn’t directly work for NERV members, the arcology had a boom in population once construction on RED EARTH Phase Four started in March 2013 when the Elies, at least for the foreseeable future, threw their lot in with Pavonis. It also saw a slight increase during the Boskone War of Belters, but the majority who went to Mars instead of cislunar space went to Port Lowell and Helium, instead. The arcology’s biggest population boom to date was shortly after the opening ceremony for New Port City when a surprising number of Japanese immigrants moved there. [table] |
