To be fair, he did try to save the guy, but he was shouted down and - literally - washed his hands of the whole sordid mess.

Nah, he was definitely not an Italian, but he was possibly Italic. He was a Roman citizen, equestrian class, and with our best guess from the name, probably an ethnic Samnite (which is in Italia but is not a Latin area). There's very very little information on Pilate's personal life. I'd rate the original concept as true because "white" as a concept didn't really exist then -- but you get lots of accounts of bigotry against Judeans, Assyrians, Edomites, Persians, Egyptians, Samaritans, and all sorts of folks that today we'd lump into one ethnic group.

(Bruce should've totally visited them afterwards in the asylum about how with the resources of Wayne Enterprises he can help them with their environmental goals and make all three of them absurdly rich in the process)
