In my experience, you have to play superhero movies pretty straight for them to be any good. Even Mystery Men, the characters took it seriously, even though their world was fairly ludicrous.

I recall one post-manga Ranma fanfic (don't know which, or by who, but it was from the days when rec.arts.anime.creative was the big fanfic venue) where Ranma invited Ryouga over to watch the Kato show... and they wondered who the white guy was.
