It's episodes like this one that get people to take the characters out of context and assume Ruby and Cinder would get along like a house on fire.

Quite possibly. I haven't read a lot of Pterry personally (the stories are good but his writing style rubs me wrong somehow) but it's certainly his sort of humor. I just picked it up from the internet.
