How about something that shows where the new messages in a thread are since last checked/read. Currently the only way is either memory or checking the dates on posts.

That's already there, when you look at the forum -- the little green arrows to the left of the thread name are "new post" indicators. Click on them and you are taken to the first new post in the thread.
Or are you talking about in the thread proper, when you have it open?

Ah! I see! I didn't know the little green arrow takes you to the first unread post. I usually click the thread title and was looking for an indicator inside the thread for something that indicated new posts.
