CBC News: Uber halts self-driving test in Toronto after Arizona pedestrian death

It appears the pedestrian may have been jaywalking... but that's no excuse.

Actually it may be.

It depends on how much lead time the self driving car had to break. It doesn't matter how good the response time of the computer or person driving it is if it's got too short a time to slow the car even with the brakes at full capacity.

Sadly, self-driving cars are going to be held to a higher standard than a human driver.

There is holding something to a higher standard and there is holding something to an impossible standard.

Had a human driver been at the wheel it's quite likely the woman would still have died.

That?

That's going to be a major issue for Uber.

Not because it's a bad idea to remove as many factors from testing as possible (it isn't), but because this makes for really bad headlines that make your company out to be a reckless bunch of maniacs who should not be trusted with their equipment.
