All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Bob Schroeck - 07-24-2018

Previous thread is here.

Quote:Just edited Feghoot: s/{{trope}}/{{trope|wppage=Feghoot}}/ The Wikipedia tab did not appear. Is this a bug or a feature?
I don't think the trope template has the Wikipedia tab. Brent or Geth should know for sure. My work on templates is still at the level of cargo cult programming.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Labster - 07-24-2018

I think that might be a bug. I haven't been paying much attention, but if there's a list of changes you want to the trope/work templates, let me know and I'll do them all at once.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 07-24-2018

The documentation says it's a valid field, so either the template or the documentation needs to be updated. Since this is a real-world term used with the same meaning as a trope, it makes sense to be to be able to link to the Wikipedia page for it.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Bob Schroeck - 07-25-2018

A category delete Rob made yesterday has revealed something odd -- All The Tropes:Examples Are Not Local is not showing up in Category:Examples Are Not Local, even though the category shows up on the page as a blue link. Oddly, All The Tropes:Examples Are Not Recent and All The Tropes:Examples Are Not Arguable do not seem to have this problem.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 07-25-2018

We've got hundreds of categories like that. The only fix is to go into the pages tagged with the categories and edit them, refreshing the category list in the database.

I'm slowly working my way through the Unused Categories list, but that's just the low-hanging fruit.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Bob Schroeck - 07-25-2018

Soooo.... any chance we can find and implement a template like this one? I ask because we have a very specific use for it -- our page for the Speech Bubbles trope. I just stumbled across it today, and with the help of the Wayback Machine I've reconstructed our badly damaged import into something approaching the appearance of the page in 2012 (TVT has since rewritten it to no longer be self-demoinstrating.)

I was just hoping we might be able to make use of MediaWiki's versatility to replace the boxes with actual speech bubbles so that the self-demonstration was actually properly demonstrating the trope.

And yeah, I know as an admin/bureaucrat/grand high poobah I probably have the rights and ability to do this myself. The knowledge and skills, on the other hand...

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 07-25-2018

I was about to ask "why not just copy that template?", but I see it has the same issue as copying from TVTropes - incompatible licenses. (Theirs is CC-BY-NC-SA, just like TVT.)

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Bob Schroeck - 07-25-2018

Yeah, exactly.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 07-29-2018

I've picked some low-hanging fruit. What else goes in this new category?

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 07-29-2018

"Face, Nod, Action", "Film/Fridge/Boom", and "Pro Porn Clones" have all been nominated for deletion for over two months. I just posted a deadline to all three Talk pages - edit by Friday, or the pages get tossed.

And I tossed "Characters (animation)". I kept the category, since it's being used to identify Characters subpages for Western Animation works. If that's an issue for somebody, then you're invited to clean up the category tags on hundreds of pages.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Bob Schroeck - 07-30-2018

Obviously I'm in favor of deleting them.

Hmm.   Any of the "Humans are/do *" tropes would fit, like Humans are Warriors and Humans Are Cthulhu.

A few didn't, but they pointed me at pages that did.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 08-01-2018

Since more than a few Recap pages are missing recaps, I've added a line to MediaWiki:Recap for new pages and created Template:Needs Recap for the pages we already have.

If I'm out of line with the "speedy deletion" bit, feel free to remove that part.

Do we want to add a new section "Recap Pages Needing Recap" to the Community Portal? If yes, we'll need to change the category in the new template.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Bob Schroeck - 08-01-2018

I don't think the "speedy deletion" bit is out of line.

As for the portal section, I generally do that every time I create a "problem" category so yeah.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 08-01-2018

Sounds good to me.

Category:Recap Pages Needing Recap already has quite a few pages.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Labster - 08-01-2018

Yeah, empty recap pages deserve to be recapitated.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 08-06-2018

Why are there so many pages with ignored display titles?

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Bob Schroeck - 08-06-2018

The best I've been able to determine is that there is some kind of nested DISPLAYTITLE usage on one particular variety of subpage -- I don't remember what it is -- and that causes the handling to barf.

What I want to know about DISPLAYTITLE is what that "title is not equivalent to page name" error (whatever the actual phrasing is) means, and why do some titles that vary only in capitalization throw it?

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 08-06-2018

"title is not equivalent to page name" is presented when the displaytitle doesn't match the page title... and MediaWiki titles are case-sensitive except for the first character. Thus, {{DISPLAYTITLE:Reboot}} would cause an error on page ReBoot, because B =/= b

DISPLAYTITLE is for changing italicization, replacing spaces with underscores, or changing the case of the very first character of the page name... and that's all.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Bob Schroeck - 08-06-2018

Ah, okay. I guess I was attributing more or wider functionality to it than it actually possessed. Thanks.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 08-06-2018

So much for thinking this would be a quick task... The special page Pages linking to disambiguation pages lists at least 57,000 links to disambiguation pages. (That's where I finally gave up looking.)

Considering that there are that many links to disambig pages on ATT, maybe we should give those links their own colour, the way we do with Trope pages. (IIRC, we aren't using orange as a link colour for anything yet.) Assuming that wouldn't be too much work to implement, of course.

Good idea.

Also, I'd like people to chime in on this:

https://allthetropes.org/wiki/Topic:Uic81ikd19gyhswi

Jade Shaundi wants to revive the Trope Pantheons, but he wants to avoid the horrid mess that the one on TV Tropes currently is, and would love suggestions.

If you guys have any, please help the guy out, as I'm not opposed to its revival, so long as we can fend off the cringe the TVT version has become before it starts.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - Bob Schroeck - 08-07-2018

Frankly I'm not interested in the pantheons. It strikes me, like Tropeco, as just unnecessary cruft. But I'm not going to fight against it if people want to re-implement it.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XII - robkelk - 08-07-2018

Okay... I guess "poster girl" isn't as well-known a term as I thought, but I like Jade Shanui's take on it: make this a poster gallery instead of a list of "gods".

A fortuitous alternate interpretation, IMHO.
