Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 10-18-2018

We've got yet another party leadership fight brewing. At least it's not the party in overall power this time, just the other third of their coalition. Which means we'll be changing deputy PM, not the top chair. *Sigh* I am really sick of the eternal dick waving contest Canberra's been doing for the past decade and a bit. It's nothing but a distraction that doesn't really change the government's overall policies anyway, and it keeps them from getting yelled at properly for that.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - hazard - 10-18-2018

And you've just answered why they do that.

I know why the do it. It's just really tiring.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 10-21-2018

So, after losing the big chair, our former PM decided to retire, triggering a by election in his electorate. An election his party lost. So now we have a hung parliament. *Slow Clap.* Well done you utter idiots.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Dartz - 10-21-2018

Unfortunately a hung parliament does not mean what it sounds like

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 10-21-2018

Eh, it'll be more functional than some government systems would be in that situation. I'm still annoyed at them shooting themselves in the foot.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 03-25-2019

And now one Nation, the racist asshole party, has been exposed trying to get under the table funding from the fucking NRA.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Black Aeronaut - 03-25-2019

..… oh for fucks sake!!! Please tell me the NRA wasn’t actually considering it!?

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 03-25-2019

In exchange for relaxing Australias gun laws? Of course they did! They even shared their techniques for smearing shooting survivors!

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - hazard - 03-26-2019

So... what exactly is the Australian legal stance on outside political funding?

Ugh...  I never thought any organisation could sink lower than PETA, but the NRA just fucking pulled it off.

Illegal. And more so after new laws passed last year, a change One Nation leaders voted in support of, while making a lot of noise about how they're funded solely by public donations (Despite constant irregularities with their taxes that has seen their leader declare bankruptcy and flee to England once, and the party itself lose their registration with the electoral office more than once). Other parties have been caught out by it before, and there's been consequences. But more than the legal consequences, this is the sort of thing that is going to cost them very heavily in terms of support from the public, and other parties in regards to where they'll be recommending One Nation on this years election ballots. Gun control isn't a hugely controversial topic over here. While there is the occasional person that thinks they're too tight, they're unlikely to get much in the way of political support. A lot of Australians see the NRA as a bunch of fanatical gun cultists that value guns over the lives of children. Trying to cut a deal with them is just asking for trouble.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Black Aeronaut - 03-26-2019

*Snorts*

You know, this is ironic.

The NRA may have accidentally done you a favor. By going along with this and getting their hands caught in the cookie jar, these One Nation ass-clowns are very likely going to be out on their ass.

Now if only the Republicans would finally fucking self-immolate in a similar manner...

We've thought that before. Hanson and her fellow scum have been a damn political cockroach since the late nineties. We thought we've gotten rid of them, but certain media networks managed to normalize her image and reputation enough that she personally managed to get elected to a Senate seat. Her position in the nineties came about when the party backing her realized she was a special kind of crazy at the last moment, decided it was better to just abandon that seat for a term rather than have her stinking up the place, but the ballots were printed and her name was linked to them in that region (Which was probably some of those assholes trying to have their racist cake and get away with it, really).

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - hazard - 03-26-2019

I wonder if accepting foreign donations needs to be punished on two sides; one, on the political party's side, equal to the sum times the relevant election's official's years in office, including those from the new term. So if there's a 4 year term for a new MP and the donation is 50 000 Australian dollars it now costs the party 200 000 Australian dollars.

For the donor I wouldn't mind one whit if it's more expensive, to the count of a percentage of their global income equal to the percentage of the vote the relevant official/party received in the election.

It won't ever happen, but you'd be surprised how fast foreign organisations stop being a problem when getting caught means utter ruin. [b]No[/n] organisation can really afford losing 10% or more of a given year's income for a single count.

You can say "Murdoch"; now he's an Amerihern citizen, he's our fault, not y'all's.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 03-26-2019

No, it's a mutual shame.

And the asshole senators excuse for the stuff in the video: "We'd just arrived in America and had a few beers, so we didn't mean it."

Putting aside that there's more than one video... Getting drunk means you accidentally asked a gun cult for money in exchange for meddling with our laws? That's your excuse?

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - hazard - 03-26-2019

Remember, legally speaking the things you do when under the influence of a mind altering substance are still your responsibility unless you were not aware you were partaking of a mind altering substance. And even that isn't much of an excuse when you are in circumstances you should be expecting you may be exposed to a mind altering substance.

Also, that just potentially excuses the Senators. How did the NRA react? Because you can actually commit an act of conspiracy to break the law with just 1 as long as that person believes they have at least 1 more person involved.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 03-26-2019

I know that, you know that. They're that arrogant to think otherwise.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Labster - 03-27-2019

If these senators love the NRA so much, they're welcome to become dual citizens of the USA. I'd be happy to sponsor them as soon as possible.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 04-21-2019

So, election season. The Government budget is in surplus for the first time in a decade, which usually means it's time to vote Labour back in so they can spend it all. And they're already rampaging ahead with hordes of election promises that'll put us in the red instantly. *Sigh* I really don't want them to win. Bill Shorten is a disgrace to the very name of Union Leaders.

My favorite election movement is an ongoing effort by a group of voters to try and get both sides to commit to preventing a collection of 800 year old sacred trees from being bulldozed for a fucking highway. It's gotten some decent attention down here in the aftermath of Notre Dames fire and the billion dollars donated to that religious hunk of stone.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 07-19-2019

God dammit, we need to put a muzzle on our former Prime Ministers...

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - hazard - 07-19-2019

How so?

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Matrix Dragon - 07-19-2019

(07-19-2019, 07:52 AM)hazard Wrote: How so?

Well for starters, most of them are conservative assholes that believe anyone not white, rich, male and straight is beneath them. More specific, in this case it was a former PM declaring that wind turbines are the Dark Satanic Mills of our time, while continuing to proclaim that coal is the future of power.

RE: Ah, Australian Federal Politics. - Labster - 07-19-2019

It's like President Trump said, windmills cause cancer. (Well, that explains the high cancer rates in the Netherlands)
