Neo-nazis conduct a terrorist attack in New Zealand - SilverFang01 - 03-15-2019

My heart goes to the families of the victims. Apparently the shooters streamed the attack live on Facebook and published a manifesto.

Let’s not give these fuckers the publicity they want.

What I will never understand... what I will know but never accept...

Is how these people can be so cold.

I'm sitting here, half a planet away, as far removed from the victims as it is possible to get. I will never know them. They would have never touched my life. There is no connection between us.

Yet I am crying. I hurt, because I have basic human empathy. I hurt because in my brain there is a set of mirror neurons that makes their pain my pain. Because we are a species that lives for each other.

AND THESE ASSHOLES LAUGHED.

They fucking livestreamed it. They made it into a mockery. It's like some demented Kobalite plan I would come up with for an In Nomine game and it happened in the real world. It's a thing I would have used as a satire of inhuman evil, committed by human beings on other human beings.

That's what hurts the most. They laughed.

I've been working over this all day. These monsters laughed, made jokes, went 'be sure to subscribe to PewPewDie' before running in and killing... how can you be so...

My sister lived in Christchurch for a year or so. She moved out last year when her husbands work relocated. We're not muslim, but that doesn't change the stab of fear I have knowing that her, her husband and my eight month old nephew could have been near that.

Sometimes I wonder about humanity. I really do.

Haji Daud Nabi, the first named fatality of this. 71 years old, his son was running late for prayers. He gave his life shielding another man from bullets. Remember his name, his bravery, his decency.

New Zealand announces plans to strengthen gun laws.
Neo-Nazi asshole shoots his mouth off, is banned from entering Australia. (I suspect more countries to follow suit with this particular fucker)
Australian Senator (Who only got in with only 19 votes after the election winner fell victim to the dual citizenship mess) makes incredibly disgusting comments, doubles down on them because he's a racist far-right monster that attends Neo-Nazi rallies and tries to claim it as a work expense. Gets egged, then assaults teenager. The House and Senate currently do not have the ability to expel members for offensive behavior, following a court ruling in 2016. Odds are good it's facing a challenge in the near future.
Tabloids in many countries, including Australia, condemned for humanizing murdering asshole.

Humanize the victims, not the white supremacist.

Meanwhile President Dumbbell defends white nationalists as good people who are not a threat.

But he still keeps using the same language to justify his stupid wall, and about a couple of weeks ago a Coast Guard Lt. was arrested for planning to do the same thing in US soil.

How the N.Z. mosque shooter engineered his attacks to feed the internet's far-right

@Matrix Dragon, does Australian election law permit a recall election?

RE: Neo-nazis conduct a terrorist attack in New Zealand - Matrix Dragon - 03-16-2019

Sadly no. And as I said above, currently the Senate does not have the authority to expel a member for behavior, following a court ruling in 2016. However, there is a full scale federal election due before the middle of the year, during which his seat will be contested. Our Senate voting paper has two options. You can vote for your preferred parties choices, or you can vote below the line, which requires marking at least a significant percentage of individual candidates in numerical order. Last election, this asshat only got 19 individual votes. His seat in parliament came about after the guy that got the vote, a member of the very xenophobic One Nation party, fell victim to the dual citizenship mess (In fact, I think he was the one that kicked that all off). He was their backup option, as they believed they could get him to support them. Instead, he's been a raving loony above and beyond even their level of Bullshit, and even Pauline Hanson isn't enough of a jerk to stick her hand into the PR meatgrinder he's made himself over the past few months.

RE: Neo-nazis conduct a terrorist attack in New Zealand - robkelk - 03-16-2019

This is the internet Facebook, YouTube, Twitter built!
Quote:An Australian who murdered dozens of innocent bystanders in New Zealand on Friday livestreamed the deaths on Facebook, spinning a spotlight onto the abject failure of social media to control harmful content.

The 28-year-old shooter, whose name isn't worth publishing, fired on defenseless people attending Friday prayers at a Christchurch mosque, killing 49 and injuring dozens of others.

Quote:Here's a certainty: the shooter checked that his Facebook livestream was running and was being broadcast online before he left his car armed with a semi-automatic weapon. If it wasn't working, if his battery had run out, or data had cut out, or connection to Facebook's servers broke, he likely would not have left the car but would have stayed inside tinkering with it until it did work.

After this no longer can we accept the argument that alt-right rhetoric does not result in violence.

Violence has always been the end goal of those groups, either provoking it to justify a response, or getting enough political power to simply do it themselves.

And I need to remember to vote against my local Senator come the election. She's talking herself up a lot at the moment, but she was the first to start applauding and embracing that asshole mentioned earlier this thread when he made a speech in the Senate that included the phrase 'final solution'. Actions speak louder than words, after all.

In other news, this decent soul on Twitter has been collecting the names and stories of those lost in the terror attack.

RE: Neo-nazis conduct a terrorist attack in New Zealand - LynnInDenver - 03-17-2019

Yeah, I was commenting yesterday with friends that odds are good this is going to cause people to start calling for much more active moderation - I expect it will slide towards demands for "curation", where it's no longer "wait for complaints" but a demand that not only is it all actively reviewed, but that platforms are considered to have actively CHOSEN anything posted. And it's going to be demanded that, no, we don't care that you're in the United States, if you're international, then the absolute "Freeze Peach" does not and CAN NOT apply. For the record, I'm in the United States, and do believe there needs to be a strong right to free speech. But at this point, the costs of exercising one's free speech have been dropped so low that there's really no disincentives against being a horrible human being.

I've actually been spending the past several years sliding slowly away from social media as a tool in my life, and increasingly I've been considering it more and more that it's actually harmful to our society, between the way it's been run, the way the money overrides 100% of all the other concerns with it, etc. In fact, I sometimes wonder if why the EU Copyright thing is being set up so immensely toxic to the way the internet is, is in part to "salt the earth" against another social network ever being able to be launched before they make a concerted effort to kill Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr, and all the rest.

Viral mosque shooting video raises questions about social media firms' responsibilities

Quote:Mai said social media sites are often able to remove content such as music videos that they believe violate someone's copyright far more proactively and automatically using artificial intelligence.

And Facebook announced Friday it was planning to use artificial intelligence to automatically flag "revenge porn" for removal.

"The technology's there," Mai said. "But for whatever reason, this kind of thing is not being flagged as quickly as other types of content."

He acknowledged live videos are unique and may be harder to detect and flag than content like music videos, but said there have been enough such incidents to program a computer to watch for certain patterns.

I think all of us - including Philip Mai - know what that "whatever reason" is:

Quote:Putting in place a system to flag violent and criminal content, along with a process for people to appeal removal, and hiring humans to make the final call could be expensive, Mai said.

What price human life? Ask Facebook and Twitter.

RE: Neo-nazis conduct a terrorist attack in New Zealand - Matrix Dragon - 03-17-2019

... I am hating the Australian media so much right now. If they're not showing parts of That Video on the news, it's goong on about how the Assholes family is 'coming to terms' with what's happened. Gah.

RE: Neo-nazis conduct a terrorist attack in New Zealand - classicdrogn - 03-17-2019

Barring being the same kind and magnitude of assholes, his family are most likely shocked and horrified as well. That's not to say that they should be the only focus (hardly!) but it is a legitimate angle to cover.

It would be comforting to think that his family are also assholes (in the theory that like makes like), but my own family is excellent evidence that this is not the case.  I have 2 aunts (and 2 aunts in law) and 5 uncles; My Aunts are all at least moderate to liberal (interestingly the oldest of them who lives in the most conservative state is probably the most liberal).  On the other hand, my Uncles range from a Gay Rights activist and journalist through a truck driver who married a Philippine national, a university sports director, a successful businessman, and a former military officer who believes Reagan was too liberal.

So yes, I would agree that despite the shooter's attitude, it is entirely possible that his family are perfectly nice people although I suspect (unless he was completely estranged from them) that they were aware of his views (if not aware of how far he was willing to go or of how little he valued other human lives; or perhaps how narrow his definition of human was).

RE: Neo-nazis conduct a terrorist attack in New Zealand - Matrix Dragon - 03-17-2019

It's not just that they're doing a story about the assholes family. It's that it's the centerpiece of some of their work, with childhood photos, and statements from people that knew him that he was such a sweet boy, and what could have led him to take such horrible actions, what was his goal...

I shouldn't be surprised though. These are the same news networks that spent years rehabilitating the public image of our previous Most Disgusting Politician to the point she went from hiding in obscurity and bankruptcy in England to getting back into the Senate. Their opinions have long been clear.

Honestly. I wish they'd knock it off with the gushing neighbors, and try to find out where things DID go wrong. Fuck off with the fluff! Let's see some REAL investigative reporting, dammit.

Out of curiosity, are those news channels part of Rupert Murdock’s media empire?

Some of them yes. Others are owned by rich scumbags in his circle of 'friends'

Natch.

Why the eye rolling?
