50 years ago today, the first "summer blockbuster" opened - robkelk - 06-20-2025 RE: 50 years ago today, the first "summer blockbuster" opened - MorningDaylight - 06-21-2025 Great acting, good screenwriting, not-so-good special effects, but I suppose everyone and their mother knows now that is why the shark rarely shows its animatronic face. Spielberg's greatest strengths(action and horror) are very well-demonstrated here. It's hilarious, in a kind of black way, to watch Spielberg reacting to being snubbed for Best Director, because now the Oscars are basically an award for film snobs, and there is zero chance, zero chance, this movie would ever be nominated for any "serious" award in a post Deer Hunter world. The shark is just a shark, and this kind of "childish storytelling" would not fly well in a world of metaphors. EDIT: I do not think it's a good movie, sorry if I didn't make it clear. The premise is ludicrous, but it's not sci-fi, how am I supposed to take it seriously then? A giant shark that eats people "because". |
