I've been seeing a lot of "Asuka-with-eyepatch" images recently. I presume this is a reboot development?

Not that I'm aware of, but there appears, at least in my experience, to be this weird eyepatch fetish in anime art. I've seen several characters with medical eyepatches (as opposed to the more piratical) that pop up in the more... *cough* mature art. I generally chalk it up to Rule #1 ("Japan is a Very Strange Place.").
