Well, with the advice of a co-worker, I found a solution to my problem. Instead of trying to make this work with an event/handler approach and the IPostBackEventHandler interface, I converted my server-side code to a webmethod which I'm calling with jQuery's $.Ajax() function. It works, and revealed a bug or two I need to address now that the big problem is fixed.
