Stanislav Petrov, 'The Man Who Saved The World,' Dies At 77.

If you don't recognize the name, perhaps you recognize the story -- his refusal to launch a counterstrike when a Soviet computer reported that the US had launched an improbably-small handful of missiles in 1983 kept World War III from starting over a computer bug.  According to the article he actually passed away in May, but no one realized at tthat he was the officer whose insistence on checking the results he saw saved the world from nuclear annihilation.

This may be premature, but it looks like Tom Petty may be dead or dying.  According to the linked article, he was found unconscious and without a pulse Sunday night after an apparent massive heart attack.

Quote:Law enforcement officials tell [TMZ] that the 66-year-old rock legend was rushed to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital where he was put on life support and his pulse returned. Later the decision was reportedly made to remove him from life support after it was found that he was lacking brain activity. ... Though his current condition is unknown, he was found in critical condition.

How did I miss this?

Back on June 15, Comedian Bill Dana -- AKA "Jose Jimenez" -- died at age 92.

For those of you who don't know who this guy was, here's the routine that made him both famous, and a friend to the Gemini astronauts:

NASA staff actually radioed "Okay, José, you're on your way!" to Alan Shepard as he launched on his historic flight.
