Somebody needs to make a parody cover of that clip.

Peg and I have decided we're going to get tickets for the Atlantic City show - and if It's not too much we're going to go VIP for once.

Fuck it....

I might have to take an American holiday next year.

I love the smell of rotaries in the morning. You know one time, I got to work early, before the rush hour. I walked through the empty carpark, I didn't see one bloody Prius or Golf. And that smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole carpark, smelled like.... ....speed.

One day they're going to ban them.

So... the tickets went on sale at noon today. And after a short discussion, Peggy and I decided to use a little of my inheritance from my mom to spring for what just might be the only VIP concert tickets we'll ever buy in our lives. So in five months, March 16, we will be seeing Al perform live, for like the first time in five or six years.

And tomorrow is five months later. Since the casino in Atlantic City where he's performing is like, 2 hours away, and the concert and meet-and-greet we get to go to afterward is going to run rather late, we got a room in the casino hotel, and we'll be staying overnight. We'll be leaving tomorrow afternoon, so I'll probably be on the boards at least once before we go, but in case I'm not, well, I'll give a report on the concert when I get back.

Just a shout-out from the two of us from 8th row center at Circus Maximus at Caesar's Atlantic City. It's between the Weird Al Jeopardy game and the start of the concert proper, and we're just chillin'. Literally - the heat in here is real low. I've already got a bunch of pics to share when we get home. Oh, I finally got to be That Guy Who Buys The Last of That Item You Really Wanted At The Swag Table, an accomplishment I'll treasure for hours, maybe days.

What item was it, to the extent that matters?

Oh, it was the very last baseball cap with the tour logo on it:

And since I'm posting pics...

Lobby stand-up of the tour logo:

"Weird Al" Jeopardy, a gameshow experience just for us VIPs.  The guy in the blond wig and the sash that reads "Vanna White" is actually Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz.

The opening act was Emo Phillips, who I haven't seen anywhere in years.  His sociopathic cloudcuckoolander manchild persona from the 80s has evolved into a sociopathic cloudcuckoolander senior citizen, but he's still wildly funny.  Peggy, who earlier in the day claimed she never found him funny, was screaming with laughter during his act.

And now a couple shots from the concert proper.  I have a lot more, honestly, but without the music, what point is there?

More in the next post.

This last is from the final song of the encore, when they did "The Saga Begins".  I'm just including it for the backdrop.

And now the pic I'm sure you're all waiting for.

Now that that's out of the way, the swag we got:
This is the set list, which I had Al autograph. Yes, he really did sing Tommy Tu-tone's "867-5309 (Jenny)" as the first song of the encore.

Some of the stuff we got for free because we paid a lot of money to be VIPs:  Mousepads and VIP tags on lanyards.  We also get a couple of Al wristwatches but they weren't ready yet and we'll have to pick the designs we want later.

Oh, and the special badge we had to wear to get to the meet and greet:

And one more post with a few more shots.  Maybe I should increase the maximum attachments per post...

And now the final installment of the pic subthread.

Peggy had Al sign the T-shirt she got:

The back of that T-shirt, which is a fun read (and takes about five minutes or so to completely read out loud):

I got a different T-shirt -- it has the tour logo on the front and the tour schedule on the back (sorry, Rob, he already hit Ontario a few days ago).  Nothing about it different from anything you haven't already seen, so I'm not bothering with pics of it.

Overall, the concert was a lot of fun.  There were songs on the set list which I hadn't heard in years, because I've never gotten around to getting CD copies of my vinyl and cassette albums; I'm going to have to rectify that.  He did some messing with expectations -- they did "Dare to be Stupid" as 60s psychedelic rock, and everything in the Unplugged Medley was performed in a completely different musical genre than it came from.  Oh, and if you've read the back of Peg's T-shirt above, the "we're not sure anyone but us is going to enjoy this" vibe is apparently real -- Al seemed genuinely surprised and pleased that people turned out for this tour and were having a good time.  It's odd that he seems to think that all people really enjoy are the outright parodies, and not what I consider the technically cleverer work of his pastiches and style parodies.

So anyway, it was 1 AM before everything was done and we went back to our room to crash.  (And did I say I loved staying in the hotel where the concert was?  Terribly convenient.)  And this afternoon, after a late breakfast and checking out, we walked up and down the boardwalk of Atlantic City for a while, as the weather, while cold, was still rather pleasant.  Along the way we counted off familiar street names, and finally ended up with this picture of Peggy, standing at the intersection of the Boardwalk and Park Place:

(For those who aren't aware, the spaces on the Monopoly board are named for streets and neighborhoods in Atlantic City, where the game's creator had enjoyed many happy vacations before the Depression. And AC has these wooden arches over the beach access points that are found where each street dead-ends basically at the boardwalk.)
