Canada would rather buy used fighter jets from Australia than new jets from the USA
Canada would rather buy used fighter jets from Australia than new jets from the USA

Story here

Yes, we'd rather go halfway around the world and buy fighter jets that need to be overhauled than to go just across a shared border and buy new.

You know why?

Because, apparently, Boeing doesn't like not being a monopoly. So they used protectionist rules to complain about Bombardier doing what Boeing does all the time - accepting money from the government. For building a commercial jet in a size that Boeing doesn't build any more. And that move puts Canadian and Irish aerospace jobs at risk.

While they're crippling our industry for no benefit to themselves (because they aren't in that market any more), they want to sell us some military airplanes.

No, really.

Why should we do business with a company that's like that? Especially when there are European fighter-jet-manufacturing companies that don't do that and are perfectly capable of building NATO-spec fighter jets. We just need to let them place bids - which is why we need the used jets for now, to fill the gap until we get the new ones from somebody who knows how to play fair.

So, yeah, hope you enjoy the business you can get domestically, Boeing... but that's what you get if you don't like free trade deals.

I stopped paying attention to that nonsense a long time ago. I just hope the boys at Cold Lake and Bagotville are able to get some use out of those F/A-18s we're getting from the RAAF.
