A "reach-ahead class" is a class in next year's syllabus, instead of last year's syllabus - Chiyo-chan is getting ahead of her course load instead of needing to take a re-do class. If it's called something else in California, feel free to change it.

Well, given that they're all high school graduates, if Chiyo is taking any kind of coursework, this makes her ineligible for admission to UCLA the following year.
