6.7M quake strikes southwest of PR this morning
6.7M quake strikes southwest of PR this morning
#1
At 4:24 am (PR time) a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the southwest of the island.

My family is ok, but there is plenty of damage to roads, buildings and power company.

Please have them in your thoughts prayers today.
“We can never undo what we have done. We can never go back in time. We write history with our decisions and our actions. But we also write history with our responses to those actions. We can leave the pain and the damage in our wake, unattended, or we can do the work of acknowledging and fixing, to whatever extent possible, the harm that we have caused.”

No. It seems they can’t. From what I have heard, although there have been casualties, the death toll stands at 1. May change as communication  is getting spotty. But for now...

Today was supposed to be the first day back to school but a quake (5.8M) in the early hours yesterday made the government reschedule for the 13th while they inspected the school buildings.. Considering the shape some of those schools are in today if this had happened during the day and with full classrooms...<shudder>

I will upload some photos later when I’m at home.

Update: The two power plants located on the southwest of the island suffered severe damage to their water lines, and due to incompatibilities with new generators bought for the Palo Seco plant, the system will not be able to recover for a couple of weeks at least.

<sigh>

And there's still only been one confirmed fatality? That is amazing.

After a series of aftershocks varying in intensity from 3.5 to 5.0, this morning a 6.1M just shook the island again with more buildings damaged and several landslides reported.

Immediate questions. How are you and yours holding up? Secondly, anything we can do to help?

My family is okay, mostly just anxiousness due to the constant shaking. As for help, a lot is being done on the ground already, but the thought is appreciated. If I know of any further relief efforts I’ll let you know.

This is the twitter feed of David Begnaud, CBS reporter and considered by us to be as puertorrican as any born on the island. He has been on top of the disaster just as he did with María. Any information about the situation on the ground can be reliably got thru his feed:

Puerto Rico's earthquake damage is visible from space.
NASA says the earthquakes, which cause permanent changes to the earths surface, forced ground change up to 5.5 inches, west of Ponce.
"The ground appeared to shift downward and slightly to the west."

That's... Pretty dang substantial for a 6.7!  Do you think that it was in part due to the aftershocks?

I don’t know. What I do know is that every quake has been pretty shallow, 10km or less from the surface.
