Song of the Day, 12 April 2006
Song of the Day, 12 April 2006
#1
Everybody's building ships and boats,
Some are building monuments
And others jotting down notes.
Everybody's in despair,
Every girl and boy
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here,
Everybody's gonna jump for joy.
Come all without, come all within,
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn.
I like to do just like the rest, I like my sugar sweet.
But guarding fumes and making haste,
Just ain't my cup of meat.
Everybody's 'neath the trees,
Feeding pigeons on a limb
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here,
All the pigeons gonna run to him.
Come all without, come all within,
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn.
Let me do what I wanna do, I can't decide them all
Just tell me where to pull
And I'll tell you who to call.
Nobody can get no sleep,
There's someone on everyone's toes.
But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here,
Everybody's gonna wanna doze.
Come all without, come all within,
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn.

Bob, I have not heard the Dylan version before; however, a check on the part that did not sound right to me "But guarding fumes and making haste" keeps pointing at Dylan not Manfred Mann.
Here's a transcription of a version by Manfred Mann. I am not 100% positive on the backing vocals in the fadeout (marked by []) as they were a little hard to be sure of near the end.
THE MIGHTY QUEEN
Manfred Mann

Come all without, [Yes, singin' a song] come all within
[Everybody]
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

Come all without, [a song] come all within
[Here it comes now]
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn
[Lets a body free]
Come all without, [yes, singin' a song] come all within
[Everybody]
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn
[It's comin' along]
Come all without, come all within [yes, singin' a song]
You'll not see nothing like the mighty Quinn

You're quite right. I had trouble finding a Manfred Mann version of the lyrics on the Web, and tried to back-construct from memory and a copy of the Dylan lyrics. I obviously missed that line...
