More Inspirational, Meta &c. Sites
More Inspirational, Meta &c. Sites

The old thread sank & shifted to the merits of the SR-71, so here's a new one.
For a nice pundity look at the implications of technology (written for biotech and nanotech, but handwavium would fit in without any problems, "Singularities and Nightmares" by David Brin is a good read.---

One that's more for colour... According to this article, fourteen "Dane space programs are starting to coordinate activities under an informal "Global Explorations Strategy" umbrella.

So now I'm finding appropriate stories on The Inquirer...
A bit of background colour for Comrade Fnord: LED developed in Russia in the 1920s, and possibly the transistor, too...
Something for WireGeek: Scientists at the Tokyo Institute of Technology develop electrically-conductive cement - and it's transparent if it's thin enough!

Here's a page I've put together, that would be of interest to anyone writing stories beyond The Limit:
Nearby Stars Within A Half Spectral Class of Sol
My list of "intereting" stars is somewhat different from Comrade Fnord's, in that I chose only stars that current thinking says might be easy to colonize. On the flip side, I put together a couple of GURPS Space Atlas style tables showing the distance between any two of the stars, and how long it'd take to travel between them at 500c (ships' speed) and 10,000c (FTL comm speed)...

(Edit: Is it my imagination, or am I the only one posting inspirational &c. sites nowadays?)

Returning from a long weekend interacting with *actual* fen, it occurs to me that in our zeal to get *fandoms* represented in Fenspace, we're missing out on some of the real-world fan *clubs* who could make it out there.
So!
Avistrum Academy of Sorcery, a Denver-based Harry Potter group that goes above and beyond in the call of duty. Excellent color fodder for Fenspace's Wizarding World.
The venerable 501st Stormtrooper Legion, a quintessential Star Wars club with global reach and organization.
Likewise, the Trekkie counterpart is STARFLEET.---

A couple from NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day site:
I don't care whether this is true or not in our universe; it's just too cool to not exist in Fenspace: Water Claimed in Evaporating Planet HD 209458b (According to this page, HD 209458 is "a Sun-like star 150 light-years away" - that's less than four months away at 500c.
I'm sure somebody can make a decent Fenspace page banner using this image as a base...

Apparently, there's a world about 33 light-years away that's mostly water ice at about 250 degrees Celsius (or about 480 Farenheit). A few details are available in this CBC.ca science news article...

I'm missing something, since water ussually liquifies if pressure is applied, since ice is less dense than water (which is why it floats to the top. Does the behavior hange at higher pressures or is it something else?
Edit: never mind, I found an explanation: www.martin.chaplin.btinte...phase.html
