Fenspace IRC Channel
Fenspace IRC Channel

has pretty much everything you need to figure out the basics of IRC. As
for clients, the big one IIRC is mIRC, but I've been using the same IRC
client since '96, so I'm not one to judge.

Operational note for those visiting #fenspace: On Saturday (8/2/14) sandwich.net IRC is moving completely over to SSL. Most modern clients will let you select SSL in the user preferences, so it's not a great hardship. Chatzilla users can connect using /sslserver irc.sandwich.net

What client do you use?

There should be an option somewhere that lets you enable encyption, or enable SSL

Hexchat man

Much better. And free.

Since that's not exactly helpful, however - take a look under your network list if you have it saved somewhere, or wherever mIRC stashes its connection options. It should be labelled as 'enable SSL' or 'enable secure connection'

I use Adium on the Mac as my IRC client.
I selected "Enable SSL" in my connection listing for sandwich.net.
It still says "ssl handshake failed" when I try to connect.

You changed the port to 6697?

Don't think so! I'll check that when I get home.

You might also need to tell it to allow the use of an invalid cetificate. Some IRC networks tend to be a bit iffy on having properly valid cert's.

Obviously enough, changing the port fixed the problem. Thanks for pointing it out.

FYI, sandwich seems to have disabled SSLv3 support.
Without warning anyone about it.
You will need a client that handles TLS now.

There was plenty of warning - at least, there was in the IT security field:
http://www.dfranke.us/posts/2014-10-14 ... pened.html
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cg ... -2014-3568
http://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2014-3567
http://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2014-3513

If you can still use SSLv3 anywhere, complain about it.

That's why I caught on to it so quickly rather than wondering WTF was wrong with the thing and assuming it was just a server being borked. M I didn't even know Xchat only used SSLv3 and didn't offer an option for TLS. And I know a few people were having issues connecting to the channel anyway with SSL being required by the server now.

I just thought I'd save some wondering on the part of other people. Hexchat, however, supports TLS.

You'll have to patch, upgrade, or change your client software.

Does whoever set up the spamhaus filters for sandwich know that XBL really shouldn't be used to ban users because it has a tendency to trap a lot of dynamic IP's?

Especially from people who happen to have subscriber-level NAT, like so many 4G carriers do here.

That's three times it's happened.
