Outlinking
Outlinking
#1
Is there any way to keep the forum from turning every link on the page into a link to some other site?
Everything that's linked from the forum gets turned into a link to something like 'outlink.yuku.com' that auto-refers on to the actual destination.

An actual link captured from this process:

Code:
http:// drunkardswalkforums.yuku.com/topic/6966?page=2&dr_log=-1&linkout=http%3A//i160.photobucket.com/albums/t187/ecs05norway/Fenspace%2520Fu/RockhoundsLogo2-1.jpg

hmm, I linked to steampowered.com a few times in the "free cake! It's true, I swear" thread (general chatter).

And I'm not seeing the activity you are describing.

does it only happen to longer/complex urls?

Testing... http://robkelk.ottawa-anime.org/primer/index.html]link to my Anime Primer

Looks okay in "preview" mode - not a linkout link (yet).

Edit: And looks okay after the post is saved - still not a linkout link.

Which Yuku editor are you using, ECS? Maybe something's wonky with one of the input methods...?

Is it just URLs entered as text and then getting converted which is causing the problem, or also links that you code with the link-/link tags or the link button on the full message editor?

I have not seen this behavior in
1) urls yuku auto converts from flat text (aka):
%[link=http://example.com]http://example.com]

2) urls I specifically tag in the url markup [ url ]
%[link=http://example.com]example dot com]

3) not sure about link markup [ link ]... testing:
http://example.com]example dot com

ETA: nope. I have no idea what would cause that

I saw behavior like this once before, when I was trying to look up some information using one of the computers at Best Buy. Since it didn't happen at home, I thought maybe they were doing it... However, when I enter the url ECSNorway provided, I notice "outboundlink.me" in the list of things NoScript is blocking.

A discussion of what that is can be found here.

It's not clear exactly what does and doesn't cause this to be invoked, other than requiring javascript from that domain to be allowed. The version I'd run into before actually changed the links that were displayed in the page; this one seems to not. But I might not have noticed if that arrangement hadn't depended on a server that wasn't working at the time.

While this does not appear to be actively malicious, I think it might still fall under the category of "Things you're paying yuku to not have."

That's pretty damn sneaky. Gonna have to install NoScript once I get home.

In a similar but less sneaky-bastard scheme, my webmail system actually edits URLs embedded in emails into things like this:
Code:
h ttp://webmail.rochester.rr.com/do/redirect?url=http%253A%252F%252Fprivateerpress.com%252Fwarmachine%252Fgallery%252Fcryx%252Fsolos%252Fsatyxis-raider-captain

Ah, that's why I couldn't see anything -- I'm running NoScript, and my alloweds for Yuku are relatively few.

That may well be something in your yuku preferences.

Do all the links altered that way simply link back to yuku?

It may just be an attempt to run outlinks that way through a db of known phishing urls or simply to display a warning that you are leaving the domain.

The world of warcraft forums do something similar if you have every used those, for example.

That does bring up a couple questions. ECSNorway, were you logged in when you got that link you posted? And, after installing NoScript, when you right click on the NoScript icon, does it show any outboundlink domains in the list?

On that link, I'm pretty sure it is -not- doing anything like what VladimirTherin described. Running it through a javascript-enabled browser, it loads that thread, and then sends you to photobucket without any message. Also, there is a javascript file located on that page with a copyright notice for "Driving Revenue Inc." and containing code much like that described in the journal I linked to. (Although it appears not to function quite the same way.) No warning is displayed, nor is there any sign of any other processing being done.

This file is located on yuku's server, and seems to be getting loaded on all pages, but I haven't observed it doing anything unless the redirection code is in the url. Then it does something that invokes outboundlink.me (and fails if it's being blocked by noscript), and redirection happens. This script doesn't appear to be rewriting any urls statically or dynamically. Nonetheless, it is a required part of the framework for actually doing so, and as such is concerning.

Update: I just noticed that index pages are trying to invoke *something* on outboundlink.me . No idea what it's doing, and it's not on topic pages. Still, this bears watching.

It looks like a variant of what's been going on with outbound links on LiveJournal. Only there, one couldn't tab-open links in Firefox with things like noScript installed. They're basically adding 'referral' code for things like affiliate programs, but the links add-ons are hosing up attempts to open in new tabs.

I don't see them, because I've got all that stuff blocked off in my Firefox install. Smile
