Euro-"Justice".
Euro-"Justice".
#1
From the UK Daily Mail
Quote:
After months of being taunted by a gang of yobs, grandmother Diane Bond finally stood up to them when she was abused while walking her pet dog. During a torrent of foul-mouthed abuse, the frail 64-year-old prodded the teenager ringleader gently in the stomach when he urged her to Hit me, if you dare.
Moments later, the 5ft 1ins pensioner found herself flat on her back and nursing a broken arm after the 15-year-old boy, who was 7 inches taller, pushed her to the ground. But to add insult to injury, police officers arrested her for assaulting a child after his mother moaned he had been attacked.

Your link seems to not be working. Well I followed it and couldn't find the article.

I don't know what to say except this should sound silly.
Sadly it sounds like it would fit right into "justice" systems here in the US.
I remember an article about an 80 plus year old man in New York city who was getting mugged ?weekly/dayly? at knife point in the elevator.
Reporting the crime only brought an officer to take a report and leave.
After a few weeks the old man eventually purchased a pistol and shot his regular mugger. The police arrested him for carrying a a weapon and there was talk of making him pay the muggers medical bill.
Pistols are illegal in NYC and the old man has his weapon taken and was having to pay a fine.

Also, the Daily Mail has a reputation as a right-wing tabloid rag.

I'm sorry, ECSNorway, the what? Oh, a search indicates that's a derogatory nickname for the Guardian; the same search indicates that Guardian was awarded National Newspaper of the Year in 1999 and 2006 by the British Press Awards. I do believe I once posted 11 articles, one of which was from that? Is that what you're trying to make a point about?
Sure, then, for the sake of argument, say I did, that the Guardian is unreliable, and that I wasn't posting something that could be found in other papers as well. Bully for you, ECS.
Now, does that somehow make the Daily Mail less of a right-wing shill paper? I mean, I suppose it's less of a right-wing shill group than this, yes, but that's hardly saying much.
I'm simply pointing out the fact that's a notoriously biased source. It has also been known before to completely distort stories to make a point, such as one infamous example when they accused former BBC Director-General John Birt of becoming a shareholder in a company that serves pornographic - and if I recall correctly, paedophiliac - interests (the company in question being Paypal).
Whether you care to find unbiased sources on stories, or whether you prefer to unquestioningly believe what stories you'd like to believe, regardless of the quality of their source, is entirely up to you, I suppose.

Ayiekie, instead of trying to hijack the discussion and change the subject, how about talking about the main point? It doesn't bloody matter how the paper leans politically in this instance. I've seen stories like this from both left and right papers for a couple of years now.
Doesn't the weirdness of how the law is applied in this instance and many others like it bother you?
I'm curious. What would you do - assuming you were in charge or had some influence - to solve this problem?
Or is this a problem to you?

Logan, I'm pointing out the story is suspect. That isn't "changing the subject". That's entirely relevent to the subject.
Since we don't have an trustworthy source for any of the details of the story, talking about it as if it's real is pointless. Most cases I hear of like this that sound so outrageous are actually far more reasonable when the real details are known.
Therefore, I'm not going to speculate on what I would do, because I have serious doubts this even happened in any way like the paper said. Even if it did happen like that, the story lacks in many details that would give context to the actions that occured. Knee-jerk reactions to situations without proper context are great for paper circulation, but I try to avoid them.
If you know of some other stories like this from sources that can be trusted, why not post them and then perhaps we'd have a better basis for discussion?
