Get paid to heat a barn with all the doors open
Get paid to heat a barn with all the doors open

Yes, in Northern Ireland, it was quite possible for a brief period to earn a living off the government for doing nothing more than buying a biomass boiler, hooking it up to an old shed, and leaving the doors open. Pig farmers ousted the pigs and turned into boiler repairmen, keeping their machines burning all night through winter and summers.

Because someone offered an incentive - a payment for every metered kWh of heat delivered through a renewable source - without every bothering to think of putting a cap or an uppet limit on it. If it racks up on the meter, you get paid.

And here's the fun part.

Those payments are contractually locked in for 20 years.

So. A million poiunds over 20 years. That's a pretty good living for doing sweet fuck all but watch a boiler burn.

Eventually, they closed the loophole. But not before it turned into a manstrously hilarious clusterfuck.

That sounds like something that would happen here in the US. Combining agricultural subsidies with "green energy" subsidies must be the holy grail of vote-buying.

If someone makes a stupid law that makes you money, why wouldn't you take advantage of it
