‘Proper use of force’

16 Minas, 598 SN / 21 July, 2008 AD

Thankfully the hospital did not keep me over long for their checks. As it is, my magical core will be some days recovering from my trial.

But I am getting ahead of myself.

This morning I woke to peace, the last few days of hectic villain and hero activity had calmed. There were few about, and in Paragon, even fewer villains on the streets than even during a Rikti raid. It was, to me, a perfect opportunity to test my spell.

It was such that I left my apartment went up to the Legendary’s base, and made use of the teleporters there. A few ferry rides and a request and granting of invisibility from a fellow hero later and I was soaring to Monkey Island, one of Peregrine’s sub islands. Before arriving there I engaged my own version of invisibility, gravity bending the radiation around my form. Too, I had flicked off my wristcomm, disabling all signals from it, including the Medcomm activator

I should make note, of course, of my secrecy in this matter. There is a clause in the Bureau of Superpowered Affairs contract to heroes: Use of proper force. What I planned to test this morning was far, *far* outside the restrictions imposed by that clause.

I have written before of several spells I have made that go outside these restrictions, but I believe that if the medico’s knew that I had done that on purpose...

But I digress once more.

Upon arriving at the island, I had set myself down between two rather largish groups of Rikti Monkeys, trusting in my concealment to protect me for now. I whispered spells of holding, but instead of an enemy, I placed these upon myself. I kept those and the spell of concealment running in the back of my mind, and then I began to Sing my new spell.

The Monkeys had immediately noticed my voice, but could not tell the source of it. I had felt the drain upon my magic, but I had not even completed the first stanza. I knew then that I would need much more concentration.

I dropped the spell of concealment and put more magic into the spell. The Monkeys swiftly spotted me and both groups had begun to run over. However, by then I had finished the first stanza and knew my spell was a success.

There was a crack, and the Monkeys near me had attempted to back away, but it was too late for them.

Before me was a Singularity.

Not the semi-intelligent, Paragon-approved version that most gravity controllers gave two or three of their spells to, but a true black hole.

The howl of the wind had been deafening, the strings of gravity had plucked and pulled at me and my clothing, the Monkeys had flown into the point of space, and I had just finished the second stanza.

I had kept the spell of holding running in the back of my mind, but it had been so very hard to keep concentrating on both that and the point of gravity before me. My hair had flickered around my vision, Monkey’s psychic wails screamed in my head, I had felt something rip from my face...

I then completed the third, and final, stanza.

The Singularity had collapsed, and I had as well.

I had fallen some twenty to thirty feet into the crater left behind by the spell, and I had seen at least one Monkey scrabbling up the sides of the pit to run from my fallen form. Thankfully, that was when I had heard my wristcomm activate again, and start beeping urgently about my health.

Some short time later, another hero had been dispatched to look in on me, and had brought me back to the hospital.

Later I was informed that what I had done was classified as an ‘Uncontrolled Breakthrough; Magical’ and was scheduled to attend a session on ‘Moderation of Magical Usage’.

I had also had to run by Icon to pick up a new eye patch, and repair several buttons on my vest that were now compressed to a spec of dust on that island.

But now I sit, writing down my new spell as I have before in these pages. At least I am secure in the knowledge that none but I know Syndan, which this is written in. So I leave this for today, to rest.

[The following is written in English, presumed to be sung.]

Sing!

Sing the song of Devastation!
Of strings of Fate,
And gravitation.

Sing before and sing of after,
Land and sky blend,
Until the after.

Sing of keeping until the end,
Songs of death
For enemy and for friend.

Thoughts on the Past and Future

20 Minas, 598 SN / 25 July, 2008 AD

As I sit here, writing this, my mind stays troubled.

I have taken the past few days off to try to sort through my thoughts on this matter, but they are proving difficult to set into order. Hopefully, putting them into a more permanent history will let me put them to rest, for now.

Some few days ago, a group of the Legendary, accompanied by Silicon Sabre of the Riot Force and (surprisingly) members of the Infamous, traveled back through time to a point in the history of this world that was at a point of crisis. Through trial, tribulation, and no small reservation on my part, we were able to defeat the man known as Romulus, in his bid for power. It was after this accomplishment that I overheard other heroes and villains going on a quest to perform the exact same achievement. Puzzled by this, I made a few inquiries and learned that due to several facts, some few of which was a villain from our time interfering, Romulus himself being an Incarnate, and the very vagrancies of History itself, Romulus was, and would still be, in the process of accomplishing his goals, while people from the present time attempted to halt his endeavors.

This only reinforced my own reasons for not traveling to Cimerora: It is not my own History that I am meddling in. I hope that if Terrence ever learns of my true reasons to avoid that time and place, he will forgive me. Cimerora, Ouroboros, these places are not of or for me, one not native to this universe, but in going to them, I have learned things I wish that I had never.

Romulus still plots in the ancient History of this world. Mender Silos despairs that any help will not change 'the coming storm'. Though I am so close to achieving my final goal, I cannot help but wonder, who am I to interfere with the ways of this world, Past and Future? I despair.

But soon enough, I will have completed my Song, and I can at last start on the quest that I have yearned for.

Addendum: After having asked around the Legendary and coalition, it seems that several of my comrades have taken down Romulus multiple times. This disturbs me as to why they themselves have not questioned his revival each time.

I'm sorry, but this reduced me to giggles because it's SO TRUE.

I still haven't come up with a good RP reason to keep doing the same TF over and over, besides "it's fun"

Given how Silo's TF and SF cancel each other out, I suspect one of the other groups that meddles in time is trying to ensure Romulus maintains his stolen
empire.

For One Night Only!

22 Nial 598 SN / 28 Aug, 2008 AD

After nearly a month of traveling across the United States of America, what is the first thing Terrence does when I return? He takes me Archon Hunting! I have just returned to the base after being in the City for four hours knocking Council heads together. Admittedly there were a few breaks when we tackled several covens of Thorns with the aid of Enynn and BladeStryke, but the two of them wandered off to other pursuits after a time.

But at least it was an enjoyable re-introduction to the City, and I even accumulated enough heads for Castle to grant me my 49th security level. Soon enough they'll stop counting, and I will join many others of The Legendary.

Truly though, that does not excite me as much at the knowledge I gained on my trip out-of-town. For the past month, I have visited several sites of intellectualism, attempting to gain knowledge of interdimensional travel.

It was an exhausting time, but quite interesting. Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and thaumatology, and several other distinguished universities opened their doors to me. It was also interesting to see how heroes in the rest of the country operated. for instants I did not know we supported a Great Lakes chapter of The Legendary, but they graciously housed me during my time there. What disturbed me the most, though, happened during my arrival at the Kansas State University campus, where I was mobbed by a large group of people who wanted to hear me Sing! While I had placed several records of my non-magical singing on The Legendary's computer database, and I do sometimes participate in the Perez Amphitheater Talent Show, I had never imagined this... mob of people wanted to hear me. I had to hastily modify one of my gravity shields to keep them away from me, but since that led to me Singing, the crowd just screamed and surged forward at me. I was saved by one of the local heroes, Soulcyte. After he calmed down the crowd and dispersed them, he escorted me around the campus. He was quite surprised by my reaction to the crowds since I was apparently one of the KSU campus' favorite Heroes of Paragon. When I explained that I had never left Paragon City before this trip, and that I had no idea of my fame, he took it upon himself to show me just what he meant.

I would have never guessed at the attention those of us in Paragon receive from the fanatics that yearn after us. When I inquired as to the uproar surrounding me, Soulcyte told me that for the past three months, I had been voted as KSU's “Favorite Hero”. He told me that one of the music clubs had gotten a hold of a video of one of my Amphitheater performances. The people here had not only been entranced by my voice, but by my accompaniment: Two of my special, non-combat Singularities.

It was after several days there that a small group of my fanatics approached me with the offer of a concert. I demurred answering and called back to Paragon to ask the leadership what they thought of the idea. Unfortunately, they were not available, but Jackie, who was on watch, told me that it was all right. At least, that is what I assume she meant. I am still not an expert at translating her patois into something I understand.

So I asked around for what songs they would like to hear, and gave a one-night-only showing on my last day there. Interestingly, a full third of the requests were for a song in my native Syndan. I found this curious, and asked one of the students who was aiding me in organizing the event why they would want to hear a song they could not understand. She told me that even though they could not understand the words, they could still feel the meanings through my voice and my emotions when I sang.

KSU and the concert happened a week and a half into my trip, so I was expecting the small DVD in my inbox. Hopefully it hasn't caused too many problems for Shiziru, Lora'lai, and Evangelia.

The primary purpose of my trip was a vast success, though. I should have enough information now to complete my Song.

(Stuffed between the pages of this entry are several printouts with strange geometries and lines on them. A few handwritten notes in Syndan mark the pages. There is no other writing to note what the printouts concern. The last printout is a colored flier, the top of which is printed in large, bold lettering: “For One Night Only!”)

Nice little vignette.

I think you might mean "thaumatology".

If there isn't such a thing already in-game, it might be fun to organize one. It'd just be a little more difficult to arrange than a costume contest under Atlas...

Not really, Bob. Virtue has a branch (garage?) of the Paragon Taxi Service, I'm pretty sure we could arrange a couple of Taxibots to ferry people in.
Getting out again, eh, that's THEIR problem. [Image: smile.gif]

Or, hell, we'll put Pook in his tux and get him to do it. Fancy-like.

Mm. Prize for winning the contest is being taken out of Perez. Losers are just left behind.

I acctually remember back when they tried to start up the Perez talent show on a weekly basis.... It didn't last too long, though. After the first showing,
audience and performance dropped off sharply...

It has been over three years since I began this diary at the urging of Psi Angel. Three years since I was ejected by an unknown combination of spells from my
homeworld. Three years since I swore my oath to return to my home and avenge my crew.

Three years I have been building my Song.

Tonight I rest. Tomorrow I Sing.

The Way Home

24 Alowe, 598 SN / 1 Oct, 2008 AD

And so, I return.

I have proof of concept, at least, but now I must answer the cliche question: Now that I have the means to go home.... where is it?

Allow me to backtrack.

Eighteen days ago I first Sang my Song of the Gate. I stood upon Circe Island, the exact spot where I was deposited upon this universe three years ago. I was dressed as Captain of my skyship, ready to step into anything: Battle, capture, or silence. I was not expecting to walk straight through my Gate into a cliffside.

Unfortunatlly, even though I was at the same physical spot on Earth, my Gate did not lead back to my homeworld. So much for the easy way.

I settled in for plan 'B': Gate-hopping from one world to the next, searching for my own. Of the six worlds I visited in the past two and a half weeks, I received only two real surprises:

1: That of the six worlds, only one was completely devoid of sapient life. I was able to make good use of this world by practicing my lethal Songs there. A good thing that I did, for several of them worked differently than I had designed. The Gravity Well, while it performed admirably when its cylinder was but two feet in diameter by two feet high, was completely ineffective and almost... random when its area was increased to its performance level of 40 foot by 40 foot. Not the smooth transition from one to one-thousand gravities that I had envisioned. Density was almost as bad.

And lets not forget No. 2!

The theories that several scientists at Portal Corp. have on there being multiple 'Shards' of Earth and Paragon City are, in fact, true. I had hopped to the fourth, fifth, and sixth worlds in rapid succession, trying to get back to my 'Native' Paragon. Unfortunately, this task was much more difficult than I had thought it to be in my design, and I was quite lost when I came back to Peregrine Island on my sixth hop. To be precise: The Peregrine Island of the 'Infinity' Shard of Paragon City. Sufficed to say that after several days discourse with the scientists there I was able to make it back successfully to my native Shard of 'Virtue'.

But now I, like several members of The Legendary, come back to the cliche again. I can go home. I just don't know where home is.

I will go searching again, of course. First though, I must ask Lora'lai if she would not mind me emplacing a beacon for me to more easily return here, to my Home in Paragon.
