Ba-bump. Dual Pistols entered Open Beta yesterday, though you likely already know that.

*Scampers off to test*
Let's see... Commander Sassinak Shepard, late of the Systems Alliance and former Spectre. Still has her hardsuit and Biotic/EMP powers, as well as a couple of her sidearms after her trip back in time through the wormhole...
Why NO, I haven't been playing Mass Effect 2 too much this last week AT ALL. Why do you ask? ^_^

Honestly, that was one of my favorite series EVER growing up.  I have well-thumbed copies of all three books.  My personal favorite was Sassinak, followed by Generation Warriors.  The Death of Sleep was -good-, but... I dunno.  It didn't grab me as much as the other two.
What's bugging me now is... would Discipline count as Martial Arts, or as Willpower?  Or would it fit better as the background idea behind the Controller class?  These are key points!  I mean, Lunzie should have Empathy somehow, but she can't have it and be a scrapper!  But that gal could -fight-, so she's not a wimpy 'troller!  Aaaah!
... so, uh, yeah.
(Of course, my traitorous brain points out, Aygar would be -easy-.  Huge bodytype, SS/Invuln or SS/Willpower.  But you have to RP him with a -brain-, not just a brick.... AAAH SToP THAT!)

I liked them too. And see much in common between that universe and the one portrayed in Mass Effect.
My one problem with that series, once I was older and understood context better was the whole militant vegan thing. There's a REASON we humans are omnivores, it's because we CAN'T live solely on plant material. Oh sure, we can for a long time. And a MOSTLY vegetarian diet can be good for some people. But eventually the lack of certain proteins and minerals does catch up with you.
Frankly I thought the heavyworlders had a POINT and got a incredibly raw deal all around. They're not culturally insane for using animal products like the Feds think. All life is predation in one form or another. You go down that path of logic too far and even killing plants becomes unacceptable. And then where will you be?
I didn't fault the characters. I still liked the books. And individually, I can't recall any of them channeling McCafrey's beliefs on this in a preachy fashion. But there was something deeply disturbing about that culture.
Pfagh... but this is veering dangerously close to politics, really. Still - it's interesting how one's viewpoints on certain books can change with differing levels of maturity as one goes forward in life.

I always assumed the vegan thing came from Elizabeth Moon rather than McCaffrey.  I don't have any proof of that, mind you, but McCaffrey's other works make no bones (hah!) about humans consuming animal protein.... that I can recall, anyway.
Pern didn't, at least, and if I recall correctly neither did the Crystal Singer series.

*Goes and checks book cover*
Oh right, that was a co-author thing. Hmm... read other collaborations with Moon (Lackey) but never any of her own stuff. Have to check. Hmm... Neither own website or Wikipedia has anything to say about her opinion on that. Nor does Anne Mccaffrey's site or Wiki entry. Don't want to make supposition based on incomplete data. Further analysis needed.
(GAH! Just realized Mordin from ME2 is getting into my speech patterns!  STOP THAT! ^^;;; )

Resistance unneeded. Conventional human speech patterns require breathing. Unable to match pace with Mordin. Typing though... may be problematic.

Oh, no. The vegan thing is very definitely McCaffrey. The Planet Pirates trilogy are actually explorations of the events surrounding a much older pair of books, Dinosaur Planet and Dinosaur Planet Survivors. I read those about a decade before the Planet Pirates stuff came out, and the vegan stuff just as aggressively present there.

I think Moon (and Jody Lynn Nye, who also worked on the series) did some work to mitigate it. Especially in Generation Warriors, where you get a look at the heavyworlders' society and hear about their history. But I found it interesting in spots in the trilogy, that the attitude presented by the vegan characters about eating meat in some spots closely resembled attitudes that modern-day folks have about vegans.
