The Only Reader-Customizable Superhero..
The Only Reader-Customizable Superhero..
#1
...at least since DC stopped printing "Dial H for Hero".
Use this conference for discussion of Doug's songs-to-superpowers metatalent, and to ask about or suggest songs for use in future DW installments.
I expect this area will get a lot of use -- fully half the messages on the old hostedscripts board were "what would song X do" and "here's a great idea!" I'm always glad to see posts like that -- a few such suggestions made their ways into DW2, and more will probably end up in future Steps.

Given that you'd already set up most of the songs you'd use in 2 before we ever saw any of them, its not surprising....
I do hope to see some of them in future steps!
heck, I'd love to see just what some of his Weird Al stuff does. Sana-chan's world seems wacky enough for that sort of thing..."I was an Otaku before those kids came along and changed the meaning of the word."

Well, yeah, that's unfortunately what happens when I plot for long times
in my head before even starting to put pen to paper.
> I do hope to see some of them in future steps!
What I need to do is rescue as many as possible from Hosted Scripts. I tried to keep a good running list, but sometimes I just let things go, and the posts get pushed off the bottom of the page...
> heck, I'd love to see just what some of his Weird Al stuff does.
What, like "Dare to be Stupid"?
> Sana-chan's world seems wacky enough for that sort of thing...
And I have no songs predefined for that story yet. (The plot doesn't require him to get medieval on anyone's ass until the very end, at which point, well... I can't tell you. But Rei gets the surprise of his life. )

Yeah, "Dare to be Stupid" definatly comes to mind... although there are a lot of others too. Like "Fat", "Eat It"... or even more frightening:
"The Truck Drivin' Song" or even "Your Hororrscope"
One that I doubt would work would be "Albuquerque"... it would probobly leave his metatalent going WTF????? I know it does to me..."I was an Otaku before those kids came along and changed the meaning of the word."

I dunno -- maybe a very slow teleport to Alberquerque -- or perhaps it applies weasels to the face of the target.

Don't forget that it leaves you with a hatred of saurkraut for the duration of the song too... "I was an Otaku before those kids came along and changed the meaning of the word."

There are stranger things he could be exposed to.
For example, have him walk into a sci-fi con and hit the filk room... scary thoughts galore... for example, an SW filk entitled "Yes, Sir, I'm a Wookie"... or, if he needs some quick back-up, "The A-Team's Back"... for quick transport, a little Village-People mocking and we have "In the TARDIS"...
Then again, it's almost too easy. [Image: smile.gif]

I still say that 'Kodoku no Angel' will summon simulacra of the Knight Sabers.
Or, hell, maybe it pulls the real thing across the dimensions and into the middle of whatever problem he's having.
And, with...
Waitaminute, has that happened yet? Has Sylia's epiloge been set up?
Blessed be.

Hmm. I seem to recall someone wrote exactly that at some point. I wonder who it was...

But then again, you repeat yourself. (and apologies to Mark Twain)

You can explain all you want. You just can't tell them what happens.

*innocent* I'm sure I wouldn't know. */innocent*
Hm. Of course there's also my -other- idea for a combat summon. It's particularly effective against anyone with time-related powers.
Blessed be.

The ultimate combat-simulacrum song: "The Merry-go-Round Broke Down".
For reasons left as an exercise for the class, this would summon a com-sim
of DOUG... @.@; Maybe I should have filed that one under "Songs Doug should
Never *EVER* Play". Then again, it only lasts 30 seconds or so...
On a different note: "Stand in the Place Where You Live." Causes Doug to
manifest an invisible telekinetic doppelganger, ala Larry Niven's "Gil the ARM"
but with an entire body instead of just the arm... Smile It would be selectively
intangible, which is nice, but the chaos field would probably go with it for
the duration.
(Hey, everyone in -JoJo's Bizarre Adventure- is named after rock musicians,
bands and songs... it's a natural association, although Doug might not last
five minutes on the world itself.)
Rolling Stones, "Street Fighting Man". Not sure if he'd get Anime Martial
Arts or just improved normal butt-kicking skills.
Royal Guardsmen, "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron". Creates a flying, moderately
well-armed doghouse (with a startlingly well-furnished interior!)... good for a
double-take.
Tommy Shaw, "Girls with Guns"--instant Trouble Consultants, just add music...

On that topic, what about that old 70s song, "(Everybody was) Kung Fu Fighting"?

Yikes, I just pictured EVEYRONE within a one block radius getting a temporary dan rating. Ouch.
OTOH: Hyperactive (Thomas Dolby) could give scary capabilites (hike multi-tasking up to fifty-odd simultaneous tasks)?

Oooh, I like.
Although "She Blinded Me WIth Science" is one by Dolby that maybe ought to go in the "don't use" thread.

Hi,
I've been away for a while, the new discussion board looks good.
On topic for this conversation . . .
How about "Vehicle" by "Ides of March". I see it as a song that turns Doug into a vehicle that can go anywhere, the problem is that he doesn't have control; he has to give control to the one that he "loves." Of course, this love would be only for the duration of the song.
A very useful song if he has someone willing to go where he wants to go.
Brian

Artist: Ides Of March
Song: Vehicle
Hey, well, I'm the friendly stranger in the black sedan
Oh, won't you hop inside my car?
I got pictures, got candy, I am a lovable man
and I can take you to the nearest star
I'm your vehicle baby

I'm your vehicle woman
By now I'm sure you know
That I love ya (love you)
I need ya (need you)
I want ta . . . got ta have you child
Great God in Heaven, you know I love you
Well, if you wants to be a movie star I've got the ticket to a Hollywood

I mentioned TV themes because some of those would be quite useful. Some examples follows:
"Dan Dare" (the new CGI show). While just summoning Dare might not be too useful,if Dare had the Anastacia with him...
"Monkey Magic" Summons the title character, the Monkey King himself.
"The Mike Mercury March"(The Supercar theme song). This would summon Supercar itself (and probably the pilot too)."There's only one kind of monster that uses bullets""There's only one kind of monster that uses bullets"

...Are you kidding? Have you -read- the _Hsi Yu Chi_?
If Bob disallows the summoning of such a harmless cuddly
creature as Gojira on the grounds of its having "too much
power", then Sun Wu K'ung is RIGHT out... Monkey could
probably defeat even his most powerful derivative (you
know, that guy with the color-changing hair) without too
much trouble, though that's due to superior intellect rather
than raw planet-smashing power.
Anyway, the Stone Monkey is a trickster of the first water...
and two tricksters in one spot is one too many (those there
with them would doubtless say _two_ too many Smile ).

"a harmless cuddly creature as Gojira"?
Damn, I'd hate to see what kind of pets you had as a kid...
If we're talking the Monkey King from Chinese myth, no, I wouldn't allow that -- nor would any GM I'd be running under. With two very special exceptions -- one of which (spoiler) is in the next chapter of DW2, the other of which is currently plotted into DW5 (but as always, may not make the final cut) -- save for those exceptions, Doug cannot directly summon a Power or force one to manifest.
