It always bugged me that Harry, as an abused kid, accepted the way Ron spoke of and to Hermione. What if Harry had stood up to Ron? How would the troll incident have gone? This is how it should probably have been written if JKR had not been so intent on the OBHWF trope. Enjoy! Warning for some strong language, hence the M rating, and for fairly heavy Ron bashing.

Three or four years ago, I attempted to find Disgaea fanfiction to read, and discovered that there was little of it, and none that I could even stand to give three chapters to not suck as is my standard procedure. Something Wicked This Way Comes was one of them, and had just begun anyway at the time as I recall. It's been complete a little over a year at this point, and after seeing it on a recommendations list I thought I'd give it another go, havng become more familiar with Disgaea and so having a fandom I liked more than HP to draw me to it... and much to my pleased surprise, the first few chapters have been revised to the point it is actually readable, and even enjoyable. Therefore, given the general dearth of Disgaea fic, I now pass on the recommendation here.

http://m.fanfiction.net/s/5501817/

Do note that it's ch5 before anything of Disgaea besides Etna herself appears, but as best I can tell her characterization is spot on, and she brings an amusing sort of chaos to the beginning of 5th year, so I'd say to give it a shake at least.

Edit: Also, this story earns its Horror category in the second half, so it's not for the squeamish. I'm not really into that genre as a rule either, but jump scares don't really work in text, and it is listed as complete so the majority of plot threads are also wrapped up.

Oh dear gods... I just tried to read "Troll, Troll in the Dungeons!" My eyes! It burns! It burns like white phosphorus mixed with liquid (censored)! The goggles, THEY DO NOTHING!

Every character takes the fanon flanderizations up to eleven. Shipping is thrown in despite there only having been a hint of it this early in canon, and only a tiny hint at the end of the year at that, not the beginning. There's so much purple prose stuff in the glow of the screen started fluorescing from the blacklight.

1.1/10, and that much only because proper spelling and sentence structure are mostly observed, aside from Ron whose idiot-speech is intentional. I can not state how strongly I discommend this ... this noxious excrescence of a dying parrot, poisoned by gorging on a stack of shredded thesaurii seasoned with a sprinkle of fragments from a decade-old cardboard cutout of the Golden Trio that had been fed through a wood chipper. It is bad in every way, without even having invented new ways to be bad.

It does have one use, though.  It's a wonderful way to stop taking better fic for granted.

Heart and Soul by Sillimaure. Potter AU -- Harry's trial before the Wizengamot goes much more badly than in canon, and the only thing that can help him is the execution of a long-standing marriage contract that betroths him to Fleur Delacour. The events that grow out of this act send Harry's fifth year in directions wildly different from canon.

The story is long-winded, but has a lot of things going for it, including a) a radically different version of horcruxes that both is worse than and which complicates things far more than in canon; b) a means of killing Voldemort that I don't think I've ever seen, anywhere at all in fanfic; c) a plot and characters which address, answer, and sometimes do all those things readers of both OotP and fanfic frequently point out as obvious and only sensible. Among many other things. Give it a try -- it's slow to start (and to play out) but worth it.

http://www.fictionpress.com/s/549329/1 ... Seven-Days

LoveStruck: Seven Days is a rather interesting little story that (according to the mailing list posts back in the day) began as fanfiction but as the characters and concepts were refined over time diverged enough that as written, it's original modern fantasy, in a Dresden Files, In Nomine, or Ah! Megami-sama! vein. I liked it a lot when it was being written and I still like it now, even though it's not the sort of thing I'd have expected to like, then as now.

The authors apparently had some hope of submitting it for publication once, but having made it publicly accessible online I rather think that ship has sailed, due to the way publication rights work.

I only realized now, after several weeks, that this belongs here: The Games We Play by ryuugi (epub version here), a RWBY/The Gamer crossover (at least initially) that heads into some seriously cosmic territory by the end. Synopsis: Jaune Arc wakes up one morning to discover that his Semblance has spontaneously activated -- and it gives him a video game interface to his life. Over the next several months of his life, he will go from an untrained teen wishing to become a Hunter to something long unseen in Remnant.

This is a story filled with Awesome and Win.

The first link I provided above is to a Spacebattles post listing every chapter plus links to lots of supplementary material worth reading.  Pure story thread here.

The Handbook of Elf Psychology (sequel Fantastic Elves and Where to Find Them) finished up a couple weeks ago, though I only just got to reading it myself. Int the first, Harry successfully escapes Durzkaban at possibly-six (I don't remember exactly) and grows up living more or less alone aside from various animalsin what passes for wild forestland in Britain. The sequel is after being caught at eleven and carted off to Hogwarts.

One Good Man by Rorschach's Blot is a Star Trek fic that runs from the very end of the TOS era (Kirk is just about to give the order to return the Enterprise-A to be decommissioned so the -B can be christened and launch) to just before DS9, with an ensemble cast centered around the Mirror Universe version of Khan Noonian Singh. He and his crew escape to the standard Trek universe in the heavily damaged former ISS Reliant, carrying a large number of rescued dissidents/slaves/etc.. While at the galactic level things may look about the same for most of the story, it is amazing what the influence of just one good man may do locally and in the long run.

This is one of the few fics I have read to reach the rarefied heights of a 9/10 rating.

While technically these are 'quests' and not fanfics, they read the same, they're finished and come with my recommendations:

By Sage_Of_Eyes:
A Geek's Guide: Eastern Rhapsody

A Geek's Guide: Corporation of Occult Research and Extermination
Sheridan Creighton just inherited a huge fortune, and an even bigger load of trouble. He's also just learned that the his world is built on a lie. The supernatural is real - and it threatens the very existence of mankind. Can he put his inheritance to good use and protect his country from the threat of angels, demons and monsters? (High-School DxD cross)

By Lost Star:
Villainous Ideals (Original, superhero-based)
Revan Firebrand is a brand new supervillian! And he wants to make his mark on the world! Time to build some minion-robots...and maybe make some blueprints for minions that are smarter than pigeons...

Actually, I just recommend everything by Lost Star, and all his stuff is linked in the signature on those posts. Even the ones that never got finished are worth reading.

Link To Reality
A Sword Art Online fanfiction in which Kirito is dragged into ALO along with Asuna and the three hundred SAOvivor 'test subjects'. Things go somewhat off the rails.
Excellently written, introduces some interesting OCs, and a nice take on the Fairy Dance arc instead of the Aincrad rehash that everybody and their kid sister writes.

Not a genre I'd usually be proposing, but it somehow just works for me. After all, someone had to recover the Silmarils from Morgoth and actually do the whole clap-him-in-chains bit... who else?
