[OOC][Info] In Which Black Aeronaut Lays It All Out... (NEW PEOPLE - READ THIS FIRST!)
[OOC][Info] In Which Black Aeronaut Lays It All Out... (NEW PEOPLE - READ THIS FIRST!)
#1
Okay, I probably should have done this sooner, so I'll go ahead and do it now while everything is quiet for the time being.  :p
Fair warning: This thing is subject to change, so watch for the 'New Post' indicator on this thread.  I'll keep a running change-log in this thread so you can easily find what's been changed.

There's Nothing Better is a collaborative writing project born out of an idea of mine that grew too big for one or even two authors to handle.
It works like this.
Every author is an Self-Insert (SI).  You do not have to use your name or actual residence.
The Esteemed Lord Ciel Phantomhive and his ever-present butler, Sebastian, have purchased an apartment complex in your area.  You are to be the building manager for said apartment complex.  Why?  Because your knowledge of the fictional characters that will be staying there will give you an ample edge in how to deal with them.  You will be provided with budgets for maintenance and repairs, as well as other resources to help keep your tenants.... in line.
However, be warned that this is not some simple fix-fic fantasy.  The stakes are far higher than you can ever imagine...
General plot is as follows:
Plot Arc 1ArrivalsThe Yggdrasil/Nidhog system has crashed, locking the entire multiverse down into stasis and creating  a new universe where everything is being dumped - The Metacontinuity.  But can our SI-Heroes help stymie the encroaching chaos so the Goddess can repair the damage?
Plot Arc 2Crisis on Infinite EarthsHeroes, villains, and everything in between are appearing in Metacontinuity in rapid succession.  Nations are established and epic wars are fought.  But can peace be attained with so much chaos?
Plot Arc 3Good News Bad NewsIt seems that things are looking up.  Metacontinuity is stabilizing, but signs of a deeper concern are lurking in the background.  Villainous elements have been mysteriously disappearing and that cannot be an actual good thing.
Plot Arc 4Apocalypse EverywhereSalem, Kyubey, and the rest of her minions trigger an apocalyptic event that winds up triggering apocalypse scenarios throughout the multiverse.  Can this systematic annihilation of all life in all universes be stopped?
After Story - Tales of the MetacontinuityShort stories or series about life in the Metacontinuity after the 'Matastability'.
More details:The basic idea is that you can bring in some of your favorite characters.  However, 'Duplicates' aren't allowed - if an Author calls dibs on a certain character, then that must be honored by the others.  However, alternate versions are allowed, such as American Dub Sailor Moon and Japanese Manga Sailor Moon.  Or, for another example, Harmony Gold version Rick Hunter, or the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross version: Hikaru Ichijyo.
Your charges are not going to be content for the most part.  They are going to be upset, and rightfully so.  It is up to you, the Author/Avatar-SI, to quell their concerns and keep people from hurting each other in general.  If you can also keep them from causing too much collateral damage, the our boss, Lord Phantomhive, would greatly appreciate it.
Lord Phantomhive is assisting the cause at the indulgence of the Daimakaicho, Mistress Hild.  Given severity of the situation, Heaven and Hell are setting aside their differences to make sure we all get out of this in one piece - Hell is simply in charge of this part of the operation because professional graft tends to get things done much faster in our world.  Therefore, we are not beholden to the Demonic cause, nor to the Heavenly one as we are actually working for both parties in mutual cooperation.  That said, let's not go out of our way to displease Hild or the Almighty.
The Goddess Relief Network will be on speed dial to handle most issues.  If things get far too out of hand, however, their Demonic counterparts will gladly step in while the Goddesses will work to minimize the collateral damages.
Finally, anything and everything is fair game.  Even Warhammer 40k is open....  Just not until Arc 3 or 4, please.  As we progress through the arcs, the scope will change and shift from simply just characters arriving in our midst to entire worlds and empires showing up in our universe.  Yes, this will be incredibly messy, and that is entirely the point!
As things go along, our Author/Avatar-SIs will become more than simple 'apartment managers'.  Our lot is to be leaders of heroes.  Will you rise to the challenge?  Will you retreat?  Or will you fall, be it noble or ignoble?
The choice is yours.

So, now you're wondering, "How do I start?"

It's pretty easy.

First off, voice your interest in one of the appropriate [OOC] threads.  (We'll get to thread tags in use here in a minute - they're kinda important for keeping track of things.)  Let us know where (in-story) you want to set up, what characters you want to bring in.  REMINDER: No Original Characters from fanfictions, and no AU-versions of characters from fanfictions.  We're trying to stick with what is considered 'main stream'.  That said, your characters can be from any medium, be it live action TV, film, comics, manga, anime, whatever.  You can have the characters from Yes Minister and Father Ted living under one roof if they're available.  Wink

Also Note: The characters are to be grouped together by their respective cliques.  Granted, there can be some overlap, in which case you'll have the tough choice of picking and choosing.  A good example is how the Sailor Senshi (Original Anime Versions) would be divided up:
  • Tsukino Usagi, Mizuno Ami, Hino Rei, Kino Makoto, and Aino Minako make up the first group.
  • The next group would be the supporting characters: Chiba Mamouru, Luna, Artemis, Chibi-Usa.  Though Chibi-Usa is a bit debatable seeing as she wasn't there in the beginning, but takes on a central role.
  • And of course, there's the Outer Senshi: Tenou Haruka, Kaiou Michiru, Meiou Setsuna, and Tomoe Hotaru.
Next, once we know what you're up to, draw up a info post modeled after the ones in this thread: http://drunkardswalkforums.yuku.com/top ... nnel-Files

Your characters come in groups, and each group should be spaced-out chronologically - they don't ALL arrive at once.  Sure, it might be fun, but it'd be too much potential for things to go wrong.  And it would make no sense for the Goddesses and Demons to do that during such a dire situation.

Now, about story entries...

Each entry MUST have a time stamp on it corresponding to the time in-universe that it occurs.  'Time/Date Unknown' entries are only permitted with the actual in-story time stamp place in a spoiler tag.  The purpose of this is so that when the story posts are collated into a coherent whole, we can do so in the appropriate order.

Spoilers can be done on Yuku like this:
Keep the [Story] Threads strictly [IC] (In Character).  If something must be explained, either make it a part of the story telling process, or explain it in an [OOC] (Out Of Character) thread.

The general tone of the story here is Deconstructionist.  That means we're treating this as realistically as possible with all the consequences real life would apply to the characters and the situations their involved in.  WHAT IT IS NOT: Dystopian.  Granted, things will be going on a downward spiral, but we're not writing tragedy here, folks.  George RR Martin has been bound, gagged, and escorted from the building.

Your first group will arrive (by any means of your, that is the author-you, choosing) right at your complex.  This is a favor by the Goddesses because this will be your Alpha Group - the group of residents that is most likely to be most helpful to you.  Unfortunately, doing this takes resources that the Goddesses don't have to really spare, so this is the ONLY group you're gonna get delivered to you on a silver platter.  The rest of them will appear somewhere in the vicinity of your complex - no more than about an hour's drive at the most (unless you got something REALLY flashy in mind - but make sure to run it by the rest of us, first).  You will receive NO direct notifications of the arrival of subsequent groups.  More often than not, you'll learn of their presence through happenings reported in the news.

The only exception I will make to that is if a group is resourceful enough to stay under the radar for several weeks.  At which point you'll receive a call from a helpful Goddess notifying you that they're present and probably terribly confused by what's going on, and you should probably try to find them before something bad happens.

One more thing: your earliest time-stamp (except for flashbacks) can only be within the three month window of September 14, 2016 to December 14, 2016.  The reason for this is that all the complexes are starting up at around roughly the same time, and is to be considered a 'roll-out' process.

That said, have fun with it!  Smile

Collaboration is going to be key, here.  While each of us is ultimately in charge of how we do things, we've already had one instance where an author wrote something that had serious implications for the rest of the story without bringing it up before hand.  We're a pretty friendly bunch here, and I seriously just want people to have fun, so you can imagine how distressing that was for me, especially when it was coming from someone I STILL regard as a highly respectable member of these forums.

That said, keep everyone in the loop on what you have in mind - especially if it has the potentially of making waves, because this is all Deconstruction.  Talk to us in the [OOC] threads about your ideas, especially in the threads with the [PLOT] tag because this will be where we're hashing out the nitty-gritty details.

Interaction between our characters will take place foremost within the Apartment Managers' BBS - these are [IC] posts within this subforum that also have the [BBS] tag.  Just post as if you were posting on the BBS, and make sure you're using the proper tags.  This will be the most fun part, as since our characters are all SI's of us, it will allow our characters to talk to each other exactly as we would.  If something someone posts in the BBS makes you go "OMGWTFBBQ!", then feel free to express that in the BBS.

The BBS is also a great place for on-the-fly development of potential plotlines.  "What's this?  Robkelk ran into some trouble?  I better see if I can help him out!"  This will be a fun way of quickly developing micro-plots that will help give this crazy world of ours more depth, color, and character development.

Secondly, there will be more direct interactions between our characters.  Granted, this will be less frequent and require much planning.  I strongly recommend using either Google Docs or Titanpad.  Both allow for collaborative group writing in real-time - like having a document open on the Internet that two or more people are working on at the same time, with the changes appearing as they are made.

The differences between Google Docs and Titanpad?  Pretty simple.
Google Docs is feature-rich.  Google account holders get the benefits of saving to Google Drive.  However, it can chug on older computers, especially when working on a large document.
Titanpad doesn't have many features, but it does have a nifty 'time-slider' that allows you to quickly scroll through and compare new and old saves.  It's quite snappy, even on older machines.

And don't forget - the [PLOT] tagged threads are your best friends!

Tags are gonna be critical around here, and it doesn't take much thinking to understand why.  Now, some tags have already been noted, but we'll run through them all here, just to be sure.

Foremost are the two primary tags, [IC] and [OOC] - In Character and Out Of Character, respectively.  Each thread must have one of these two tags in the title so we know right away if its IC or OOC.  DO NOT MIX THESE TAGS TOGETHER!  Threads cannot be both [IC] and [OOC].  If you're posting story snippets for the purpose of critique and commentary, that is still OOC.  I will lock down any thread that has both these tags until we can sort out what's going on and then fix it.

Other tags that may be paired with the [IC] tag...
  • [Story] - Tag for a story post in general.
  • [BBS] - Tag for posts to the BBS
Other tags that may be paired with the [OOC] tag...
  • [Info] - Tag for general information dumps (like this one)
  • [PLOT] - Tag for planning out stories in advance - very important!
  • [Notice] - Tag for posting notifications, such as extended away periods and other things that can impact the flow around here.  Keep us in the loop!
Other tags that may be paired with either [IC] or [OOC] tags...
[NSFW] - Tag for threads with content you wouldn't want your mom or your boss to see!  Must abide by the admittedly loose rules of these forums and the greater rules of Yuku itself.  When in doubt, send a private message to either myself, or the forum administrator, Bob Schroeck.  We'll both be more than happy to help.

So, with all that said...

...Please play nice with everyone else here.  I try to be very easy going because, as I've mentioned before, I just want everyone (myself included) to have fun with this.  However, if you're doing something to intentionally ruin other people's fun or you can't quite come to grips with why what you're doing is not fun...  Well, I'll be polite about it - I'll confront you about the issue by private message or email, whichever you prefer and try to work things out with you.  But please remember that Bob Schroeck has provided me with full moderator powers in this sub-forum, and I have no qualms about exercising those powers should the need arise.

Well, good to go?  Great!  Get out there and have some fun!

Yasuri Nanami is my number one waifu, if only because she would horribly murder all the others if they didn't shut up and toe the line.
"They did not care about all the other attempts wizards had made on the Lone Power through history; as far as a computer is concerned, there is no program that cannot be debugged, or at worst, rewritten."
-Diane Duane, High Wizardry
"If our friendship depends on things like space and time, we've destroyed our own brotherhood! But overcome space, and all we have left is Here. Overcome time, and all we have left is Now. And in the middle of Here and Now, don't you think that we might see each other once or twice?"
-Richard Bach, Jonathan Livingston Seagull
