All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part VI

.... Hey, guys? How about a simple page titled like, I dunno... "How do I make pages?"

Because not everyone is gonna know about the markup, how it works, and other specifics. That, and the auto page creator, as we've seen, won't always work.

Speaking of auto page creation, I just noted that the page template dropdown is appearing when you create a talk/discussion page. I'm pretty sure that shouldn't happen.

That's intentional. In case someone wants to draw up a sample page for discussion reasons or we have a custom talk/forum page template layout in the future, I set things to to allow for that. Also, got a heads up from SPF, any remaining image import issues should be resolved very soon. Also, unlike Orain, our Miraheze masters have been working double time to make sure our infrastructure is MUCH more stable, and we have a US caching server to keep performance from dropping now. [Image: banana-dance.gif]

This put a temp freeze on getting our remaining features back up, but anyone notice we haven't had any noticable slowdown or crapouts in awhile?

Well, you can thank SPF and John for not wanting to be Orain 2.0 in that regard.

I have indeed noticed that performance has been very good over all. There are occasional glitches -- for about a minute earlier this afternoon Miraheze was telling me "no such wiki" when I went to save a page -- but they resolve themselves very quickly.

Agreed, and I've already done half the work offline.

What do we want to name this page, which namespace does it go in (main, Help, somewhere else), and what categories does it get ("Administrivia", "Useful Notes", both, neither, something else)?

EDIT:
On a somewhat-related note, I see that "How to Create A Works Page" redirects to "About/How to Create A Works Page", which is a redlink. What do we want to do about that missing page?

RE-EDIT:
Wow, the entire "how do I make a page" section of the wiki needs some work...

Geth-chan has talked me into fixing up a few more broken links, and I managed to get my way through all of the missing Doctor Who pages. You know, excluding the new content that needs to be created. (The last two episodes, about the Zygons, were actually pretty good.)

It looks like MST3K needs the same treatment -- moving recap subpages under /Recap, and then deleting the useless categories and fixing some links. I'll try to automate this tomorrow -- the Whovian project above was a little too interactive for me.

Also {{subpages}} is a great way to kickstart a Recap season page. Content for free!

@Looney: http://allthetropes.miraheze.org/w/ind ... id=1141980 botting is hard

I would say, "How to Create A New Page - The Old Skool Method" and stick it in both name spaces.  If we think of something better we can change it anyhow - doing it right the first time is good, but I think it's more important this page goes up sooner than later.
Also important is that it should link to all the useful templates so people aren't stuck with having to code the blasted thing all the way from the ground-up.  It may also be useful to have a complete page templates if we don't have them already - you know, like character page, place/landmark page, item/macguffin page, works page, trope page, etc.

Do we have pages for places/landmarks and items/macguffins?  I think things like Crystal Tokyo and the Silver Moon Crystal/Ginzusho should definitely have their own pages.

Hell, I was talking to one of my brothers about the Ginzusho the other day - we came to the conclusion that it is the Perfect Macguffin because...
  • It has no ill side-effects from using it, aside from demanding the life-sacrifice of the user for certain powerlevels
  • Anyone can use it - possible requirement that user be magic user, but unconfirmed
  • Massively powerful and multipurpose, but primarily intended for healing, restoration, and protection
Thoughts?

That was kind of the primary idea for the Setting subpages -- basically to be a mirror of the Characters subpages, but for inanimate objects.  Recap is the other one of the troika, representing plot.  That's why Setting is at the top of the new pages list, even though there aren't many pages with it.
Also, I think you mean "ginzuishou".  It's not a perfect Macguffin, though, because you know too much about what it does.  A perfect Macguffin you know nothing about, except that characters really want it.  Nonetheless, the crystal is a great plot device.

Argh. But you gotta admit, the double box is nifty.

As for the other new point, I like the idea of Devices and Settings, or whatever terms we want to use, as new page types.

I think 'Things' would be a bit better, since 'Device' implies that there is some sort of function involved. Some items that would go in this category could be cursed objects. For example, the cursed Aztec gold from the first Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. The gold itself is just gold - it's the curse that's on it that does the action.

The fact that this would give us Recap, Settings, and Things is entirely coincidental, of course.

Guys? We seriously need to check all of the "replacement" images Southparkfan uploaded. http://allthetropes.miraheze.org/wiki/ ... s_logo.jpg]This was somehow supposed to be the members of http://allthetropes.miraheze.org/wiki/Cocteau_Twins]Cocteau Twins. And someone explain to me how the hell http://allthetropes.miraheze.org/wiki/File:Arthur.jpg]this is supposed to be http://allthetropes.miraheze.org/wiki/ ... he_Britons]Arthur of the Britons.

Every one of these images he uploaded while deleting the (very damned useful) pages for missing files -- every one I've checked at least -- is massively inappropriate.

Bob Wrote:And someone explain to me how the hell this is supposed to be Arthur of the Britons.
OK, here goes.  The figure in the center represents Arthur as a hero with a thousand faces, but because those faces change so easily, it's simply a mask.  The red designs represent his Celtic heritage, mostly obscured in modern works about the Grail quest, but obviously serving as the backdrop of his reign.  The black thing at his side is Excalibur, but the bar code on the side represents the fact that his myth has been repackaged and resold so many times, that little resembles the original.  This too is why Arthur wears the Mickey Mouse ears, as he was a victim of their commercialism -- and why his true face is hidden behind a mask.
Back to reality, I've taken about 200 things off the Wanted Pages list today, I'll try to do about the same tomorrow.  Most of the new page creation is numerically balanced against old category deletion.

Holy crap!

Look what I just found on archive.org - not the Wayback Machine, the rest of the site - an export of the Orain wiki as of August 9, with images!

http://archive.org/download/wiki-allth ... orainorg_w

How do we import without losing the stuff we've added to the wiki since then?

(I also found an export of the freebie wiki from the same day, so I'll need to know the answer for that export, as well.)

That a 2014 dump, I wouldn't bother, we have a more recent one.

We could, however, ask the Wikiteam to dump our current content from now on.

Ah, well. The freebie wiki dump (which is the first one I found) is a 2015 dump - I just saw the "09-Aug" on the ATT dump and didn't read any farther. My bad.

We can still salvage the images from the Wikiteam export...

Just for note, we made an entire backup of Miraheze today into a different account.  For no particular reason.  It's not like something has been going wrong on Friday the 13th so far or anything like that.
Still making major progress in getting rid of stuff on Wanted Pages.  A lot of automated, a little manual.  Harry Potter subpages are in particular a mess; I might not be able to bot that.

This is great to know. Given how much work we've done since moving to Miraheze, knowing we have a backup of everything as of yesterday is a massive relief.

Okay, here's the first draft, just in time to not be in the wiki backup:

Have at it. This needs some work - at the least, it needs a category - but I don't want to appear to be a dictator by "forcing" my view on everyone.

I finished processing most of the misplaced pages that made stuff light up on Wanted Pages.  What still needs manual help:http://allthetropes.miraheze.org/wiki/ ... rry_Potter and http://allthetropes.miraheze.org/wiki/ ... mespace=14 (way too many dumb categories there)Big Finish Doctor Who also needs some help in cleaning up the recap pages, which seem to be all mixed together.
But it was pretty productive.  Can someone run a bot and delete most of the Unused Categories?  There are nearly 1000 of them, but some of them, like [[Category:User templates ar], might be legit.
I'd do it myself, but the computer I normally run bots on is in need of repair.  No data loss -- just a broken temp sensor means that my fan unfortunately and annoyingly wants to run at > 9000 RPM.  A sensor I think is on the logic board.  Now I gotta decide whether I want to replace the thing or repair it.

Things are pretty hairy around here right now with gearing up for the holidays, but if I get a chance over the next few days, I'll 'gin up something. Got any naming patterns the bot should stay away from?
