So a while back I asked for permission to use a version of Doug’s powers and backstory in a Mutants And Masterminds game I was going to play in, (not a 1-to-1 copy, more an ‘inspired by’ version. Think how many different Superman analogues there are, for example) to which Bob kindly gave his blessing.

For any characters I plan on playing long-term, I tend to commission some art from Fiverr or similar for reference. Admittedly it can be VERY hard to find good art for reasonable (I.e affordable on my meagre salary) prices, but eventually found two I was happy with.

I gave a description (admittedly pretty vague in retrospect) description of Doug’s powers and basic equipment (grey leathers, big helmet with ear caps and visor, song magic and martial ability) and made a couple of additions for my own twist (more modern bat-clan style suit, a music note as a emblem and a visor inspired by the helmet from the Dead Space games.)

Whilst the game, like so many others, ended up falling through before it began, I got two versions of the character drawn up. Here are the results for posterity.

Hopefully it’s not an offensive result. Something to consider as a Ultimates-style alternate universe maybe.
As a addendum, I got mostly through starting my character for M&M3e, with the Song power being mechanically represented by the Shapeshifting powerset (with the subheading being Other Powers Based On Songs)
This is as far as I got, but I would love some advice or alternate build suggestions if anyone knows what they’re doing.

Quote:Q: What, exactly, does Doug need to get a power from a musical work? (music + lyrics, music + some words, words + a beat, etc.)
A: He needs, at the very minimum, a single instrument playing a recognizable melody, and a single voice singing to that melody in a language he understands. Oddly enough, different/more complex orchestrations do not reliably map to stronger powers — just different expressions of the same core concept behind the powers he already receives.

What if only some of the lyrics are in a language he understands?

For example, let's look at Dean Martin's cover of "Volare". (Lyrics here) What happens when Doug plays it?

Because some of the lyrics are in Italian, nothing happens.

Because some of the lyrics are in English, he and somebody who loves him (so, Maggie or Makoto) can fly together.

Because some of the lyrics are in Italian and some of the lyrics are in English, he gets a weakened power - possibly he gets an ornamental pair of wings.
Not a joke: Ian Griffiths and Amy Braun are "HALF/ASIAN with Amy the CODA" (official website and Youtube channel).
Which, for our purposes, raises a question...
Doug only gets powers from music if he understands the lyrics. Do the lyrics need to be sung, or can they be signed? (And does Doug know any sign languages?)

...and the newest DW-S installment coming out in just a week or so, where besides my own website should I start posting Drunkard's Walk?

Fanfiction.net is right out. Every time over the last twenty years that I even idly considered opening an account there, they did something stupid and hostile against their own users that turned me right off. Plus, I suspect their rules against songfic would make DW terribly unwelcome.

I already have an account on Twisting The Hellmouth, with chapter 1 of DW13 and a GGG installment there. Their rules are reasonable enough that I wouldn't have a problem expanding my presence there.

AO3 is another possibility. They seem to be run be reasonably sane people, but I haven't explored their rules in depth.

What do all you people think and recommend?

No, seriously. I mean, DW IV is supposed to go into Buckaroo Banzai Land, right? Are we... are we aware of the fact that the original screenwriter just put out a nearly 600-page sequel novel? Is there some other thread which has pointed this out?

I know this guy (EM Rauch) has blocked other screen adaptations of Banzai by, like Kevin Smith, but I don't give a damn. I bought a copy for my dad (it's his favorite movie), a copy for me, I'm 70 pages in, and it's funny as hell, overwritten in the style of an 1890's dime novel (which was, I think, Buckaroo's inspiration, a sort of Doc Savage type) to a point.

You guys have to read this.
